In speaking with XXL Magazine the other day, The Roots revealed plans for their ninth studio album to be released this summer. The Legendary just don't stop! Black Thought tells XXL that the new album will be called How I Got Over, a celebratory album which will reflect the story of triumph that is The Roots. The title is a direct reference to the gospel song by Mahalia Jackson that shares the same name, and was the initial inspiration for the record. For more on The Roots, their newest move to late night TV, and their weekly jam session in NYC, read the full article here. Watch Mahalia Jackson sing "How I Got Over" in the above clip, filmed live in Chicago.

d0pe! I’m extremely proud of the Roots, they never disappoint me.

  • happytrees

maybe I’m only seeing the negative here, but that sounds suspiciously like the title of a last album…

  • DigablePlanet

Wait…no more book titles? I liked the book title naming convention. Unless “How I Got Over” is also a book title…

hopefully its not as synth driven and dark as the last 2 albums….looking forward to a more upbeat and possibly more organic/jazzy roots again? i might be asking for too much but hey i can dream…if you miss the jazzier roots from the “do you want more”/”illadelphia” era go check out ArtOfficial…dope ass hip hop/jazz band who are rising up quick..been seeing them pop up on many blogs..supposenly illroots.com is releasing a mixtape with them http://www.myspace.com/weareartofficial

  • Bourguiba

I realize this is pandering, but I would love to hear some Skillz on an album named after a gospel song.

  • InHyding

    dear cfr,
The third album title was not “illadelphia” it was “Illadelph Halflife”. Don’t be scared of evolution!

  • cfr

    inhyding,

i know what its called i just didnt feel like typing it out lol im not scared of them evolving..as long as the music is good…and even though they’ve never put out bad material..there is pretty much nothing on the last album (other than “rising up”) that makes me want to listen to it multiple times

  • to “cfr”

I just can’t listen to Art Official, when I first heard them Tariq’s voice came into my head: “Joke’s on you, you heard a bitin’ ass crew but umm.” Originality is a must for me.

  • b dogg

i cant wait 4 this album, what do u guys think is the worst roots album?

  • MAINE BOOGIE

HOW CAN YOU FRONT ON THE ROOTS!!!!! ANSWER! YOU CAN’T!!! THEY ARE THE TRUE ESSENCE OF HIP HOP. EVERYTHING ROLLED INTO ONE. IF YOU KNOW THE TRUE MEANING OF HIP HOP, YOU WOULD NEVER QUESTION THEIR ABILITY OR MATERIAL!!!!!!!!

  • to “to cfr”

don’t see how ArtOfficial is biting the roots…are you saying that just bc they are a band? the roots were never as jazz focused as artofficial and these dudes are original as hell to me..i mean yeah obviously jazz influenced hip hop is nothing new but ive never heard it quite like these dudes do it..fuck it, im a fan http://www.myspace.com/weareartofficial

i am a big roots fan,i am rili worried about the new album coming out.i would like 2 have one.i live in nigeria so that means it would be difficult 2 get please anyone who can help?

  • Blunto

hell yeah. The roots are always at the top. I think this recod will be more jazzy, but a few more slow songs, judging by their inspiration. im excited.

And for the person who lives in nigeria: after the album is released you can listen to it on playlist.com or you can download it or something. wont be difficult.
