Video: Spike Lee, Greg Tate, Quincy Jones, Phonte, and Scorpeze remember Michael Jackson
Posted by gingerlynn on Jul 01, 2009
As we continue remembering Michael Jackson this week, many who were touched by his life mourn and pay tribute to the King Of Pop. First up is this touching blog by Little Brother's Phonte, who speaks for many of us as he breaks down the real *facts* behind much of the hearsay surrounding the MJ scandals of the past. Phonte asks, poignantly, "What about this man wasn't Black enough? ...Why did we turn our collective backs on a man who always reminded us that he never forgot who he was, or more importantly, whose he was?" At the end of the day, Mike absolutely inspired Phonte and his music, and 'Tay reminds us all that we should focus on remembering the music. He ends his blog with this potent question: "Why would people express such disgust and contempt for a man who constantly sang of love and peace, and used his talent to entertain, uplift, and inspire millions?" Next up, we've got OKP Lesson head, and one half of Windimoto, Scorpeze (aka scorp on the boards), with his beautiful MJ tribute blog. We couldn't have said it better ourselves. In the above clip, Katie Couric speaks exclusively with Spike Lee, and it's all about Michael. Although the interview is a bit lengthy, it's worth the watch. Also check out this in-depth Q&A with Qunicy Jones, where Jones shares some of his fondest, and weirdest, MJ memories with the fans. Finally, read the eulogy of all MJ eulogies, by our man Greg Tate, published in The Voice.

Spike says something about us Black folk embracing him now... Its sad that we didn't acknowledge him as much when he was alive. Give love when you can 'cos you only feel a lot worse than you should when He or She is gone.

OK. I finally got around to reading this. I respect Quincy Jones as a musician and a producer, but he was really wrong for some of his comments about Michael. Let me preface this by saying that I don't carry who you marry and have babies with, but he was totally out of line for theorizing that Michael didn't want to be black. I mean, has Quincy had any children with a black woman!!

in summary: i was a fan of michael's when i was a child, grew up a bit then grew out of his music, got scared of him because of that documentary they aired, but have since realized that he's probably innocent and people just took advantage of him and labeled him because of his socially unaccepted behaviors (f'uck that s'hit, anyway.). btw i still dig his older music.
anyway, quincy jones came off as a total d**k in that interview. and phonte, thanks for telling it like it is.

I HAVE A QUESTION NOT TO GET OFF WHATS AT HAND,BUT IF THEY CLAIM THAT MIKE DID THOSE THINGS TO THOSE KIDS AFTER THE FIRST CLAIM WHY WASN'T THE PARENTS OF THE SECOND CHILD ARRESTED FOR NEGLECT FOR ALLOWING THAT CHILD TO BE ALONE WITH SOME ONE THAT HAD BEEN ACCUSED OF SUCH ACT, NO ONE EVER ASKED THAT QUESTION DID THEY, I DONT THINK HE DONE ANY OF THOSE THINGS BUT THATS MY OPINION, HE WILL BE TRULY MISSED. I LOVE YOU MIKE.

i would have liked to see the interviewer focus more on the musical side of their relationship, rather than the b.s. questions he ended up asking. that's not tapping into the genius of Quincy or Michael for that matter
