Video: Skillz Speaks on The Industry
Posted by Shamz on Aug 19, 2008
Here is a (long) video described as "Skillz speaking on why Kanye was the last one ushered into the game and why a Changing of the Guard hasn't happened yet." It's interesting to hear a veteran artist share their perspective on why the game has been stagnated and the same names have been on top the last two decades.

Well that being the case... creative people are going to have to get more creative and develop a plan an stick to because back day a lot of dudes missed out on careers as recording artist because they tried to follow the NY model for getting in "Get a deal", but now this shit is so saturated with people trying to get in its tougher, and a lot of artist that probably could have had promising careers in the industry never even gave it a thought, stuck on some fame shit. Example, and I know location got a lot to do with it, Baby and Slim. Its doable the hard way but I do understand what your saying. On top of that think about all the real ill mcees that disappeared from the publics sights overnight. Example Red and Meth.

Preach, Skillz...
I don't think B.I.G. would make it any farther than Ness if 08' was the case. He'd probably get his foot in the door just 'cause of talent, but in this age, that's not enough: you have to be willing...to change your content, to wear shiny suits (etc...). B.I.G. would be one of those cats whose video you add to your 'favorites' on youtube, spittin some tight-a*# rhyme that Diddy's already heard (and bypassed) and that no one else will ever hear.
There was a girl, (whose name I forget) who sang for Diddy a few years ago: her own music, played the piano and all that: literally the next Alicia Keys. I watched this video of her auditioning for Puff and the entire time Diddy was on the phone, leaning in the chair w. his eyes closed and playin w. that dam* toothpick in his mouth.
Dudes like him aren't TRYING to 'usher in' anybody! They either still want to be famous-OR- they want to ADD to a brand (ie Band Boy...)
If B.I.G. tryin to get into Bad Boy now....Puff wouldn't give him any kind of chance, I just find that really hard to believe. Puff (at the moment) is too busy tryin to add more replicas to the brand (112/Day 26, Dream/ Danity Kane...), of which B.I.G. would be too distinguishable (real talent)*

Got a cahcne only to watch a minute or so of this and had a quick comment. It's interesting the conversation was about whether Diddy would give a shot in 2008 2009. I guess from an emcee standpoint, I wonder, if Biggie was just trying to enter the industry, what would he write about. How would it be the same or different. I think either way he would get thru because he as skills, and they do still matter in the global aspect of Hip Hop, not just the radio...my 2 cents

true indeed. i mean hand and hand this probably lead to the biggest inspiration to pirate material because of our "centralized" listening environments due to radio, mostly. the ppl that have the balls to change shyt usually dont have the doe to support it or the support alone for that matter. and thats based on "jus wanting to get paod today, not tomarrow"...
