Video: Raphael Saadiq “I Want You Back” (Live in Tokyo)

Raphael Saadiq opens his show last night (6/25/09) at Blue Note Tokyo with a tribute to Michael Jackson performing the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back."  Shout out to front of house engineer, and Roots Crew lifer, Kilo Saunders.

this is why i think people need to fall back on tributes and just listen. this is so sad and in the wrong key. booooooo

Well, it’s a tribute, not a cover. What really matters is the soul and meaning behind the performance, and he seems to be well-aware of the genuine essence of the song in itself.

The people there seem to be feeling it.

If you were there you probably would’ve enjoyed it too.

Raphael Saadiq is as genuine an r&b artist as there is right now. I think this was fine.

this video was from the 7pm show – another video from the 9:30p show here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uy8QNaAHrzQ

Video to come of Raphael performing “Who’s Loving You” – the energy in the Blue Note was intense, I had goosebumps and tears

The Japanese people are SO polite. I doubt I could stay seated seeing Saadiq perform this in person. Great tribute!
