this is okay, but the conversation needs to be about what is being said, the lyrical content of females, and males for that point. skills is one thing but content is a bigger conversation. as soon as a female mc can have something more to say that what popular culture is force feeding, then there will be growth.

(reply to really doe) All so true, But the majority of the crowd doesnt demand more. They’re programmed to like what the majority likes. And they dont wanna have to think too much, in the process. Nikki Manja, for example, is aight (for todays standards but she is NOT the torch bearer for female emcees) but all her antics and muticolored outfits. ON TOP of her wordplay, is a smoke screen. And the minority, the group that no longer matters to labels and new school of artist, know this. She aint foolin US. But over all, I thought that piece on female emcees was very good and informative. New beginners…YOU MUST LEARN

Tiye Phoenix really said something important. Also, Queen Latifah and Lauryn Hill were the only two MC’s who everyone hands down said was most important, and guess what…what’s missing? Questlove made an important comment, embrace the underground. The list of female MC’s that came after that point is the most important part… The “Glam” squad can just be gone…Really

@Son of a Sax…Agreed. But at the same time, why demand more of a place or industry who shuns more and goes for less. Not really informative because it broke no new ground. It just said what we already know. Not one person offered a serious strategy on how to balance the scales. Questlove said the right thing about connection to the underground but the HOW is the mystery…It’s bigger than Hip Hop

lauryn hill killed the female emcee…

I am a little hard of hearing. I think it would have been nice if the editors of the show would have hooked us up the names of the current underground female mc(s) …. I mean at least so we could acquire new taste for those who are attuned to the reality that all of Hip Hop is not commercialized and that there is real talent that can inspire the mind to great heights and adventures.
