In this clip, Murs addresses a question that was on a lot of peoples' minds this past summer: why were there no female MC's at Rock The Bells? Granted, there aren't quite as many rising stars in that category as you would hope these days, but still, I can name more than a few that would have fit just fine on that bill. Check out Murs' explanation above, and discuss.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xi8tW0fBZlA (female spot light!
Names like Jean Grae and Invincible would definitely be dope. I think Tiye Phoenix or Eternia would have killed it too.
Definitely would love to see Jean Grae on RTB next year!!!
I probably won’t ever play RTB for this but I’m going to say it anyway. What do we say as men of Hip Hop when we know we are breeding a disrespect for women to the point we wouldn’t want our daughters near it? Also, what are we saying about ourselves when we don’t women around because they need special treatment? Have we just reduced ourselves to such male animals that our egos and second head would much rather make excuses than put people on? Tiye Phoenix, Medusa, Invincible, Bella, Psalms One, Crew Grrl Order, I could go on and on because female emcees are everywhere, it’s just where YOU are looking. Finally, some people don;t need to speak about Hip Hop in general terms because it’s not just what you think. The Hip Hop lane I’m in has women in it. On stage and off stage. The Hip Hop lane I’m in can have an all ages show and people come away feeling refreshed and not yelled at and totally disrespected. The Hip Hop lane I’m in knows that the true measure of a man has a lot to do with his woman who by his side. The Hip Hop lane I’m doesn’t say one thing and then turn around a disrespect our women, we write songs about women and for women that uplift rather than tear down.
Amen Jahi.
The “hip hop lane” you’re in??
self righteous a little?
sorry, but MURS is an idiot. just because you’ve been given the platform to speak doesn’t mean you have something worthy to say!
There’s an old catholic saying that “Women are temples built over sewers”. Such sexism and misogyny is not exclusive to hip-hop, but like other forms of art that eventually becomes a commodity and then an industry; what results is a glass ceiling and an uncomfortable feeling, even from women in general, regarding female rappers. From Foxy to Kim, who have been seen as controversial, and at times trashy and slutty, to Bahamadhia, Lady Mecca and Jean Grae, who generate a certain level of respect and indifference from the mainstream rap consumer. There really is no middle ground.
If an emcee shows any kind of weakness, he’s relegated to the backpack, underground hipster hop genre that prevails over the internet. However, for an individual like 50, whose female counterpart would be a Lil’ Kim which she would never be glamorized as a cult figure or icon mainly because of the style and lack of feminism coming from such an artist. Not saying Kim isn’t feminine, but many believe a female bustin’ guns and swallowing soda cans over mics is downright trashy. That being said, John Wayne was revered and praised, but his female counter part, say a Angie Dickenson was seen as a smut by the mainstream culture.
There really cant be a female Biggie, and/or Pac, or even a female Jay-Z, cause their lyrical content coming out of a female’s mouth would seem trashy to many hip hop consumers, even woman themselves. And if you don’t agree look at Heather B, Lady of Rage, Linque, Nikki D, hardcore women that really didn’t achieve legendary status amongst hip hop heads like a Queen Latifah, who had to water down her image and do other things just to be accepted. But even she’s never considered one of the best emcees ever to hold a mic.
to Mr. Anderson. Yes, the Hip Hop lane I’m in, and not at all self righteous… Just as there is Reggae music, and you know that Bob Marley is in the Roots Reggae lane, and Vybz Kartel is in the dancehall lane, I’m in a certain lane of Hip Hop that doesn’t have these problems. Murs, for example, after seeing his video, I went to his myspace. The video where he’s going in on Rick Ross and 50 Cent shows him doing what, objectifying women… And the women in the videos have a responsibility as well that needs to be checked, but the point is, some of these folks need to stop fronting. If women were given opportunities to balance things out, a lot of people would have to change. Period. If you’re Mr. Anderson I guess I’m Neo.
Invincible would destroy most MC’s today (except fot Black Thought, and a few others.)
How about Tiye Phoenix?
Wow okay this cat obviously doesnt know the difference between hiphop and RAP MUSIC, rap music is the industry owned pollutant that keeps the sexes (m/f) and the races, and cultures divided using the power of spoken word, beats, and money—
where-as HIPHOP originated with female mc’s working along side people like Afrika Bambata, old school hiphop was dominated by works by Queen Latifah, yo-yo and others—-
Man to say that hiphop itself is a poison art form or is mysoginistic is like saying all black people are something
hiphop is a subculture
and the people inside represent there own views
not the other way around
i dont care what my tv says, or what my radio says
because i dont buy it
hiphop is filled with female mcs
my city (toronto) is filled with female mcs
and to be an mc A REAL MC is to cut through the crap and speak about what is honestly important to you
for all those artists that being sexists and being assholes is important to, then yes, there music should be kept away from women (AND MEN)
but most importantly hiphop comes from an originating point of truth speaking beyond cultural limitations
and continues to be that platform
besides the media blackout of all good MC’s for the most part
it doesnt mean there not all around you
Dude your soft,
its wack to hear anyone telling me that hiphop doesnt welcome all people
because originally all the elements of hiphop were a uniting force on this planet
and that is why no matter what race creed or colour mcs and listeners are still to this day discoverring hiphop
and trying to cut through all the RAP
to make it to the real messages
one

It urks me to see people fall into the traps they are taught to make, they think their building keys when they build cuffs, they think they lead a revolution when they really just complete a cycle—-
stupid
Furthermore the power of hiphop is what shook the government enough to create special divisions to send police and feds after rebellious artists. Spoken word was a main tool of the civil rights and sexual equality movements. The black panthers were powerful mc’s before hiphop was officially formed. The true power of the spoken word in delivering messages of what is freedom and defining rebellion is the reason why the industry has been bought and sold as a form of poison to the youth. It’s just another form of population control and merchandising aimed at causing youth to think they are rebelling when they are being set up to hurt their own people and get their power taken away earlier on—– I say it again hiphop is the art form that they hijacked to make rap, because the power it has is to shed truth where people conspire to keep it locked down!!!

Read “Pedagogy of the oppressed” then maybe you’ll understand
I’ve never toured on been back stage at a hip hop show but I think respect is given an earned. There is a lack of females in the game. Or should I say ones that I’m down with. I’m not down with most of the women mentioned on the posts with the exceptions of Jean, Rah Digga, and Lauryn (all of which I like). Good music is good music and maybe the sources I look to for underground hip hop are chauvinistic. I’ve always listened to good female MC’s. It seems there is greater push for Lauryn Hill to come back than who is the next new female MC.
i love the comments on this post….and for real,to think that in any area of hip hop there isn’t a a FEW women fully representing up to par is whack. mad sistas pay dues on the road…he just a dull knife that just ain’t cuttin on that XXL bull-sh-t!
but thankfully time keeps on slippin into the future, though i cannot say the same for murs rhymestyle. lol.
