Video: John Legend & The Roots “Hard Times” Live Studio Performance

We've been hearing about this project since last summer, and now it has an official release date. John Legend & The Roots' collabo album, Wake Up, will be out September 21st via Sony Music. The album "will feature soulful music from the 60’s and 70’s all with an underlying theme of awareness, engagement and consciousness— effectively telling listeners to Wake Up!" Read the full press release on the project at Legend's site. For a taste of what's to come on the album, check after the jump for a live studio performance of "Hard Times" from John Legend and The Roots (originally by Baby Huey and the Babysitters).

Excellent. A little more Black Thought and it’s perfect.

This album is going to be nothing short of Amazing! Did you all hear that baseline…ooooohhhhh that joint would thump in the car. I hope this gets to someone of importance because I’m saying now that The Roots need to keep the collaborations going A Common/The Roots album would be mind blowing.

I’m ecstatic been sitting on the baby huey album for 5yrs & this track for a year longer… great cover/mix/riff (no doubts it will get better before the album drops).

That comment about Ben Harper and The Roots collab couldn’t be any more honest. I’d love to treat my senses to that!

Holy hell this is glorious. All the soul of the original with the pulsing urgency of our time.

Also, Owen stuck his toe in that bassline. It sets the track alight. Agree that another 8 bars (or more) from BT would make this perfect. I want to buy this album right now, can we get a pre-pre-release?!?!
