Today we have the premiere for the third video off of Invincible's critically acclaimed LP, Shapeshifters. Here Invincible touches on subject matter often ignored by the mainstream with her video for "Ropes." The themes around the song (which features Tiombe Lockhart) are the issues of depression and suicide. As she talks about in the song's intro, these topics were apparently too controversial for MTV. "Ropes" aims to break the pattern of turning a blind eye to mental health issues, and to begin the process of healing. Take heed to the heavy lyrics and watch the Mr. Complex directed video above.

did you really have E&J in that flask?? LOL good shit sis
let it soak in 3 times… aside from Invincible’s sick flow, it’s great to see musicians and artists continue to push issues that get shut out by mainstream media. the subject is definitely haunting. we have to stop walking away from our battles if we want to make this world worth bearing children. even if we can’t all get together at a table and discuss, putting the ideas out there for people to intercept will subconsciously confront all of us on an individual level, and our collective conscious will ensure we stand up for what’s right in the end. can’t wait to kick it with this girl in Detroit at AMC.
LOCAL 782 REPRESENT!
‘metal health issues’?!?! Yeah I am going to be that guy
RE: ‘that guy’
it’s fixed.. thanks
This vid is bananas !!! …. nothing less than great from you ever !!! Oooh yeah the flask WAS a nice touch !!!
For real? We can get blasted with meaningless images of hyper consumption, women hatin and materialism but we can’t get 5 minutes of real talk? This video needs to be in heavy rotation. We need to stop hiding and instead seek talk about racism, sexism, and the rest of the isms. Too many want to pretend they don’t exist or that we are “post racial”..This video is on point..I see you Invincible!!
This is what Hiphop is meant to be. dat real shit!!!!!!!!! Keep shinnin!
Wow… this is amazing. Nothing else to say. Thanks for speakin’ up for the youth who have mental health issues – not only is it largely ignored, but in many countries around the world it’s not even acknowledged
.
this is the tish I crave, gimme more and now god dammit, !!
This video is dope as hell. Congrats to Invincible on a great vid.
eff mtv, for real. you don’t need them. when do they ever play music anyway – mtv is just a load of corporate bullshit and rubbish and monopolization
Keep up the good work. Did you ever need an MTV stamp to get to where you are?
Brazil is listening…
Are You Serious?? As many Horror flicks as the media endorses. and other gory crazy things that happen in video’s I’ve seen on MTV.. WOW… Rihanna’s “Disturbia” is more visually suicidal than this one… yet kids inhale the video and song for breakfast… to take it back, MTV endorsed the first SAW movie poster!!! http://www.mtv.com/photos/first-look-saw-movie-poster/1489589/1641010/photo.jhtml
Anyways Invince, You know I’m on it all day…. The Video is Dope , Mr. Complex Killed it once again, Reality Reconize Real…
Lets Get This Good Hip-Hop Music Crackin Off!!!!!
One Love….
music with a purpose.
The video came out seriously dope.
Guns and Glamor talk is always glorified by mainstream but something that is so real and personal that hits people on a mass scale all of a sudden becomes too controversial? The people of MTV have skeletons they don’t want to confront. They need more distractions with big booty’s and shiny objects. It eases the pain.
Its a dope concept, though poorly executed. I’m sure Mr. Complex is doing his ‘best’, but overall, its lacking the necessary production skills that would’ve taken this video to another level. Just having a concept, an HD camera with 35mm adapter, and an editing program doesn’t make a music video director.
One the flip side, Invince’s flow is dope tho. Her voice kept the track moving. I wanna hear more!
As always your work is amazing. I’m blessed by it.
My brother and I were just talkin’ about suicide in our hood. It’s real. Either people around Chester kill themselves using drugs, guns or careless sex. And not a single church in town will directly touch these issues. I could write about it all day but…
It’s a shame that quality music is kept underground by these big corporate rock heads! All the crazy, indecent and stupid videos they publish on MTV and they have a problem with somethin’ that is raw, real and thoughtful? Is that the best excuse they could come up with? They are probably more so afraid of your potency in meaningful lyrics.
Keep doin’ your thing.
The video is good and I think it touches the topic in a reasonable and sensitive way. The video didn´t make me feel bad or something but with the music I can relate to some of it.
I have no TV anyway but still..
I don’t get it. How the fuck can peeps talk themselves into this, I can’t believe that people actually believe invincible is good.
fucking wigger man some people just try to hard you know
“eff mtv, for real. you don’t need them. when do they ever play music anyway – mtv is just a load of corporate bullshit and rubbish and monopolization” – Hena
We live in a capitalist society. Unless you forgot.
Great song and nice low budget style video. It’s important for real artists to convey messages in their songs, f**k MTV, I haven’t watched a second of it in the last 10 years.
Also, the people who posted comments like “wigger” prove that there are enough issues to deal with. You give guys like Black Milk or Finale props but not Invincible?
I am a young adult male and I have been dealing with depression personally. I didn’t start getting help until a year ago. I realized that everything I was feeling had been that way for years. I gave in to the accepted norms and was embarassed at first to get help. I thought about suicide but it wasn’t solution for me. People I know have committed suicide or attempted. As a black male if you cant deal with shit emotionally, the perception is your a punk or a pussy. Real talk your human. The only problem I have with the song is it doesn’t offer a solution. Maybe there could be a follow up to it or something! Great start this segment of our culture needs some light. Detroit Stand Up!!
that shit was ill should’ve had jean grae in for the 2nd verse
Dope video!!!
Powerful song! Invincible, I am so proud of you girl! Warrior Healer woman f’real…
fantastic effort. amazing song. dj crossfader can hum on these nuts..but, everyone is entitled to what they think.
Much love to Invincible… She doin it big! FREE PALESTINE!!!!!!
This vid: Problematic? No. Poetic? Yes. Forget MTV. They try to mainstream everything, getting rid of the rough edges. But if rough edges exist in our society, they must be addressed. BIG UP for those who actually give a sh*t and step up to the plate.
The video speaks truth and unfortunately most of the corporate owned networks are not interested in truth. I like the way it was shot and the message is so very important. Keep on speaking our truth to all of our power. Much respect and peace!
PEACE,FROM THE BAY!
“ROPES”=SOUNDS HELLA GOOD
COME VIBE;
KIN CAMELL(GOOGLE THAT)
PEACE TO YOU & YOURS
Keep going Invivncible…You words are making a difference
solid like always, good work. mtv’s just as fulla shit as ever. i’d expect them to balk at running anything about palestine, but i’m really surprised this was “problematic” for them. and yeah, should be talked about.
Ropes came out dope…Hate the rules Viacom has in place for what gets airplay. I used to work at that 1515 Broadway office in the On-Air Promos dept. Alot of really fresh stuff always got looked over.

mtv wants to avoid suicide lawsuits. http://tinyurl.com/c85kvh
thank you so much for writing this song and making this video. living in a world where folks like crossfader and draftboi want to hate, want folks to deny who they are, call them names, doubt their amazing talents – that’s exactly why this song and video are so necessary. hopefully calling out these issues makes it easier for young folks to get a ‘glimpse of hope’. i’m posting this everywhere i can and encourage everyone else to do the same…keep creating invincible
Great content and delivery from Invincible as usual – keep up the great work and stay true to yourself! As for MTV… their priorities are so bass-ackwords. They’ll play an entire half-hour show glorifying violence (i.e., Bully Beatdown), yet won’t play a 3 minute video that can help open up discussions about this topic. Thanks for shedding light. Detroit is proud of you!
Awesome…
Reminds me of a situation that happened with King Reign’s Looking for Love video..

Suicidal overtones was not the reason MTV would not play this. This video could not get played on MTV for the following reasons:
1. The track is too dope – MTV doesn’t like real hip-hop
2. The subject matter is too deep for the average MTV brain.
(if a 10 year old can’t understand it, MTV won’t show it)
3. Your flow is too nice – MTV likes wack rappers.
4. You actually have a subject revolving around your song – MTV wants you to talk about rims, cribs, cash and chix.
5. The track is dope – (oops, I already said that:)
6. You didn’t have ONE BOOTY SHOT in your video!!! (an MTV standard!!)
7. The track wasn’t produced by Kanye, Neptunes or Timbaland, therefore MTV can’t hype it without the “regular sound”.
Feel good about your video because it’s original and it gets plenty OKP love.
This is a really good video.
Forget about MTV. Honestly. Invincible got better exposure by going this route! She’s going to attract real fans instead of just casual listeners.
Keep doing your thing Invincible. Props to you and Detroit!
Ashe. Thank you for doing your divine work and never letting the machine stop you. Much love and much respect.
ahhh…I was very, very fortunate enough to see her live and freestyle on stage she was TOO ILL!! I go to UC Berkeley and we had this event called Hip Hop in the Park and Blu & Exile were the main act. So to see her there as well was too big of a treat. it’s funny because in her unwritten freestyle, she mentioned that we were all “here to see blu” but yea she’s clean I don’t think she’s going to be changing anytime soon she’s fine where she is creatively and lyrically.
mtv has lost all respect for me. i will never fucking support that trash again. one thing is never playing good music, glamorizing emptyheaded rich kids, then only playing shit music in 7 second intervals, etc. but actually putting down a real mc for such a shoddy, bitch reason? FUCK EM.
much respect to invincible, best female in the game. peace.
Invincible, i now where your point. they don´t want the true.hear Mc Kappa, have big problems with the governement to tell his reality.WHAT A FUCK YO, THEY POINT A GUN IN MY HEAD BECAUSE IM TELLING MY REALITY?. FUCK THE SYSTEM. THIS MTV LIVE WORKING FOR THIS FUCKER´S
Definitely a banger! (but you know that) Love what you doing. Keep hittin em.
Beautiful…
