Video: Common "Announcement" feat. Pharrell
Posted by Shamz on Aug 27, 2008
Here's a very welcome surprise. We've been hearing about all the delays on the making of the video for Common's song "Universal Mind Control" and today we get the video for "Announcement" feat. Pharrell. The video's real dope and it's good to see things are in motion for Com's Invincible Summer album. I'm being told there is no street date for the album at the moment though.

Is anybody kidding me?
I can't believe anybody can't think this hot.
He's actually surprising me seeing as how he's getting a little older these days.
His shit still sounds ground breaking and unique every time.
Keep goin Com!

To be honest, i wish every song Common did was like I Used To Love H.E.R., The 6th Sense, Resurrection, Geto Heaven e.t.c. but the truth of the matter is that he can't make all his songs like that cos it's bound to become monotonous. The truth and FACT of the matter is that Comm CAN do whatever type of music he wants, he's not obligated to make "concious" music all the time, the man said he wants to make a feel-good album, by God then let him make a feel-good album. The only problem should come when the album doesn't make you feel good.
This brother can do no wrong musically in my eyes. I think we real fans should just keep on supporting him and wishing him all the best.
Common's made us think and be aware for a long time, i guess now he just wants us to relax and have some fun.

First to all the haters out there... shut up. Quit acting like you know Com the way you talk about him and his music. Let me guess... you same people prolly hate on The Roots for how they evolve and change. These are artists, musicians. There out there trying new things all the time.
Hey that's why they make chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry ice cream. Get a little of each flavor. Love Resurrection for what it is but don't keep looking for it over and over again. Good sh*t Com.

I am disappointed in this "non-official" video. I think it was an official video but with the response of people on the net being disparaging; they decided to scrap it. I'm even more offended by the fact that people like this video. This video is extremely offensive. The only two Black women in the video are considered "whorish." The women end up in the rocket ship that flies off of the page; a phallic symbol that represents Common "getting it on". While the non-black women are the "hip-hop" dancers and fully covered I might add. I've never been a "fan." The idea that he is "growing" as an artist is total BS. If Dilla was still alive, he wouldn't be doing this kind of music. Because Dilla brought the best out of him...he gave him an identity; something that he's been searching to find...for a very long time.

The video was ok. Lil X was obviously inspired by the loony toons cartoon where Daffy Duck interacts with his cartoonist but I think he could've taken the concept way further.
For everyone who is confused, this was definitely an homage to Biggie. Common and Pharrell both have that 92 Brooklyn flow. It's like they were imitating Biggie and Kim. Im feeling the track.!

Im not going to say that i dont like it, pharell sounds dope on his verse, and pharell would be a top producer for common to work with, especially with the tour, thats mad moula...But after this album it would be sick to drop something deep and thought provoking, like the roots, with questo, poyser, soulaquarians and premo again???? how about 9th??? whew...dayummm that would be bananas, but times do change..this does sound fresh, and a lil lighter than his previous work, would definately like to hear dis more than hearing lil peepie on the radio...keep doin ya thang Com...

It's called progression, coming full circle. Listen to "Can I Borrow A Dollar", and basically that's what this album might be, just a little updated version. So it's nothing new with Common saying the word "bitch". Some of you cats scared of change. Well if that the case and you vote you better not for Obama.

After Resurrection, Common dont owe a goddamn thing to the game. And especially nothing to you over zealous critical fucks. Dudes human people. If he was the same person he was in 94, that would be a waste of 14 years of his life. But you are all way too blind to ever sympathize with dude. This is the pure example of why being a celebrity is the worst job. The world, including your "most loyal" fanbase has the upmost expectations for you, and they will never seize until they are satisfied (never). If I had a dollar for every time these critical douche bags contradicted themselves on this very site...

um am i missing something here? Comm has done a tribute track to biggie... and the problem is?
it's actually quite a smart song. one, plays off the fact that it's COMMON SENSE doing a late 90s bad boy bling track. it's completely tongue-in-cheek, i mean come on "yeah i still love H.E.R. - she be needing the dick", if you take comm off the pedestal for a sec you'll see he has a sense of humour.
second, if u listen out to all the biggie flows and lines he drops in there, you'll see that the rhymes have been constructed very cleverly

Damn some of yall cats are harsh. Common is a man like most of us, capable of flaws, fallacies, mistakes and missteps. Despite what he said on "Be", he's not the messiah. Although I do agree that Com can get ignant when he wants too, I just feel he's scrutinized unfairly.
If Common stuck to the esoteric, underground format a la Jeru the Damaja, he would be resting in obscurity and turning over in his grave. His ability to adapt, not conform, is what makes him relevant, and successful, not his sometimes conscious lyrics. Did yall ever wonder what ever happened to the popularity of Canibus, Killah Priest, Ras Kass, those mofos are far superior lyricists than Common but much inferior emcees. To be an emcee is to MOVE CROWDS, not remain stagnated in a reactionary thought process. I believe his heart is in the right place. WISE UP!

The saddest thing about hip hop in my opinion is that many artists are damned if they do, damned if they don't. It's just like that line from Spike Lee's "Mo' Better Blues" where Denzil's character is slightly faded at a party and he's going on about "real" jazz as told from a "purist" standpoint---channeling Wynton Marsalis, basically. The Denzil character laments that Black people don't support "real" jazz---all other races in his mind DO. The rival to Denzil's character in the flick is played by Wesley Snipes and Wesley steps up and hears Denzil going on and on and Wesley's character goes "That's bullsh*t! If you grandiose motherf***ers played the kind of music that people like then the people would come!" In a nutshell that's what's wrong with hip hop--the 'grandiose m.f.'s' (GMF's) need to stop pulling a Judas on artists like Common any time cats like him come from a different direction. TRUE artistry is about experimentation -- look at Miles Davis, look at Prince. You GMF's truly don't respect the art if you don't respect the entitlement of the artist to EVOLVE. Comm's got rent and bills to pay and a daughter to raise. If you ain't payin' for his light bill and the college fund of this cat's seed then seriously, quit screamin' like an elitist GMF about who this cat gets his collabo on with, quit scrutinizing every noun and verb of his verse, stop waiting to pounce on his ass for every thing he does to experiment or grow that doesn't fit with the box you wanna pop him down in. Y'all GMF's do as much harm to hip hop as an art form as the Soulja Boys and Hurricane Chris's of the game.

I'm all for being conscience, witty, intellectual, etc., but some people wanna mix it up a little bit. For those rigid underground fans who wear blinders to whats going on in the world, this joint definitely disappoints. But for those who realize that its just music and for all intents and purposes Common IS an artist not a politician or professional activist, the track bangs. Dang, even Stevie Wonder stepped outta the save the world mentality to party and have fun every now and again.
Cop the album, I'm sure your gonna hear that Common Com' sound on more than a few tracks. But in my opinion the video was ridiculous, Com looking like Peety the Pedophile with them young girls.

well, i'm not saying that pharell and timbaland are bad producers or anything... and of course there will not be any collaborations between common and madonna or timberlake and the beats will not be the same (but then again who knows), it's obvious that timberland and pharell are probably the best as well as unique (you can recognize their beat in seconds, that stuff is hard to achieve) you can't argue with that, because AGAIN they are great(!), especially pharell on clipse - hell hath no fury. however they symbolyze commercialization of hip-hop to me and "we're only in it for the money" attitude, well, maybe i'm wrong... they just really like to experiment and make music for madonna and lindsay lohan... so that way common became commercialized like them. i would rather see madlib "bringing out" common, he was a partner of jay dilla after all... but then again it's good for the hardcore fans that their favorite artists common still does his thing and they would probably agree on any producer only to see him rap, pharell's fanbase will start to listen to commom because of pharells production too, and buy his album... you see it is all done to sell more records, to me that somehow leaves bad impression... well, maybe i don't know things, so correct me if i'm wrong :)))

Timbaland beats for Furtado, Justin?...not for Common...Timbaland beats for G-Unit, redman and Jay-Z?...very for Common....think about it. SAme guy. Diversity is the name if the game, playa.

Ok, I'm saying. You niggas want all of your favorite artist to be the must supreme intellectuals on every track. The are HUMAN BEINGS! Are they not entitled to have a little fun on wax every now and then. You people are ridiculous. How about you become and artist, establish a career, and then holla back...
It's a reason why some niggas succeed in the rap game, and some are super-duperly forgotten. Com has already proved himself. Go backpack yourself somewhere else if you wanna hate.

I'm with J-ack... Underwhelming. I used to FEEL Common. Not he's got that mainstream feel, sound, and ... lyricism. Respectfully he's still clever, but it's coming off less conscious. I feel what commenter Jahi is saying. It struck me the same way.
Doubt I'll buy the album. I can pretty much guarantee I won't. Not feeling his energy right now. NEVER thought I'd say that.

Video is cool but common is on a downward trend. Yeah very hipster. He should act his age instead of trying to make music for teenagers. He got me back with "be" but hes losing me again

what happened to the line- "I'll never call you my bitch or even my boo" I feel like Common is trying to serve two masters on this one, and for him to be in the lane of conscious artist
(you know that underground lane that made him relevant) I feel like the indirect disrespect to women as another sex object is strange to me. I heard an interview where Common said this project was supposed to be about what's missing in his music. I wish it was still missing. Come on Com. Don't go shallow on us... Waiting to hear what's next...

And yes, Summer is about to be over.
But I guess it's deeper than that.
Invincible Summer.
You can't stop Summer, even when Winter comes.
