Last night at the BET Awards ’08 some of urban music’s best were
honored, most notably (for us at OKP anyway) were winners Erykah Badu,
UGK and Outkast, Kanye West, and Alicia Keys.  The most exciting aspect
of the night for me, however, was the Lifetime Achievement Award which
went to Al Green!  After he was honored by renditions of his songs from
John Legend, Jill Scott, Anthony Hamilton, and Maxwell (??!! Yes, it’s
true.  Is he back?), Al took the stage and performed his smash hits
“Let’s Stay Together” and “Love And Happiness” to a joyfully geeked out
audience who stood and danced and sang along throughout both songs.
Watch Al Green perform “Love and Happiness” below, followed by links to the other two performances.
For the full list of winners, see after the click.

Watch the Al Green tribute, with Jill Scott, Anthony Hamilton, and Maxwell.  After, check out Al Green performing “Let’s Stay Together.”

The tributes were alright, but Al Green got it done with “Love and Happiness”.

feels crazy to see maxwell again!
    Longing for the album

  • Jonelle

When Maxwell stepped out I nearly fell out…I thought it was the ghost of Blackmusic past!! Great to see him out again…Al Green, priceless!!

  • Keyser_Sose

It always seems like the artists haven’t had time to really prep for these tributes…all three of the tribute performers could have blown the freakin’ roof off but they seemed unsure.

Thoroughly bugged to see Maxwell hold it down with mad confidence but, yes, Al showed everybody what real showmanship is…hope they paid attention.

I’m going to have to agree with you Jonelle. I haven’t seen Maxwell in AGES..and he looked too handsome. Three words…Mmm mmm and MMMMMm.Lol. And did you see Jill Scott’s performance? She tore UP Al’s hit didn’t she? I love her! And her dress looked fabulous on her. Girlfriend is just doing her thing and taking care of business. She kind of reminds me of Bianca.

I’m currently working with Toyota and I’m really hyped to spread the word about our new interactive webisodes, If Looks Could Kill. They follow an aspiring fashion assistant, Bianca, who is a prime example of a woman who’s got it going on. I’m talking the dream job, a man who’s got all the ladies drooling, and the spice to keep it all together when hell hits the fan. Think James Bond meets Sanaa Lathan in “Something New”, Bianca is the girl who isn’t afraid to run in her Louboutin heels!

You’ll have to see what I’m talking about. Don’t forget to check out the second episode—BFF in a Box—which is available today (6/23). This girl is definitely courageous! She’s kind of like today’s Foxy Brown, don’t you think? You’ve probably already been reeled in so don’t stop now.

I hope I didn’t overstep my bounds by directly contacting you. After viewing your blog and seeing how hip to the game you are when it comes to what’s hot and current, I figured this would be something that would catch your interest.

Looking forward to the girl talk!

Wow! Has B.E.T become so whack that no one even bothered to announce that this was going to be on? Looks like I missed a damn good show. But i’ll catch it one of the two-hundred times that it will repeat.

I agree with many of the comments, especially Keyser_Sose. Why doesn’t anyone leave it all on the stage anymore. I think I’ve been guilty of it myself at times, but hey! My black a@@ ain’t on TV!!! You must blow the frickin roof off!!! I don’t think they were paying attention. There are very few of today’s successful female/male artists who sing like GROWN A@@ MEN & WOMEN!!!!!!! I won’t even mention the lyrics. You know how that goes.

  • Nate G

Congratulations to all the winners. I’m happy for Erykah, Raheem, and UGK.
