The Oscar Grant BART Shooting & Police Terror in Oakland

By now everyone should know about the incident in Oakland, CA on New Years Eve when BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) Police murdered 22 year old Oscar Grant in front of dozens of witnesses, some of whom captured the atrocity on video. At the very least, we wanted to do our part in spreading this story as well as provide more information. There is a protest this afternoon in Oakland (details below). Hey, the MAN should have been home with the baby and the baby's mother. I read where he wanted to marry the mother of his four year old child. Guess despite having been out of jail just since Sept, he just had to go out and PARTY instead of being with the woman he says he loved. AGAIN, he just got out of THE JOINT in September after being convicted of carrying a gun. He had priors for drugs sales, so obviously he was a very slow learner. You'd think after doing some TIME, you'd LEARN something...like when the police tell you to stop, you stop. You keep your mouth shut and do what they say, like the OTHER PEOPLE who were cuffed and sitting nearby did. And you DON'T stick your face in police business if you're a bystander. Instead, this MAN decided to resist. Now, that said, his shooting was a tragedy. It was also an ACCIDENT. Even COPS make MISTAKES. When this is done, the Bart cop, whose life is ruined, will be convicted on manslaughter or involuntary manslaughter, AT BEST...and be released because of time already served. So just get ready for that. You gonna BURN DOWN OAKLAND if that happens? Like Oakland (where I was born, and my parents were born) is to blame. But go ahead, riot anyway. Show the world what you're made of.

And oh yeah, I have been STOPPED by the police since then. I keep my hands in plain sight, my mouth shut and do as I'm told. IF they had wanted to arrest me for NOTHING (because NOTHING was what I was doing), I would have simply let them cuff me and gone along meekly. BIG TIP: When you do this, you get your DAY IN COURT with your ATTORNEY to speak for you. IF you choose to obfuscate your movements, mouth off, resist, etc., hey, you get treated like a disrespectful punk...and if you mouth off and resist hard enough, you might get maced, you might get tazed, you might get clubbed, you might get SHOT. Oh yeah, I'm a VIETNAM ERA VET with an honorable discharge. NOW, GUESS MY RACE. Just for fun.

The town (as we call it here in the bay) has a reputation of violence much like San Francisco's (my hometown) reputation of being the "gayest city". After reading everyone else's comments I feel like I dont have too much to say. But i'm down with most of y'all. This is disgusting. When I saw the video I was immediately overtaken with a headache. This is beyond inexcusable, and action is necessary....but KNOW who is to blame.
My mother in law is the office manager for the Oakland PD (a back woman who also was one of the sheriffs responsible for protecting Huey Newton when he was arrested) and the violent riots there are not the way, or necessary.
More violence and reason to hurt our people will not do anything BUT hurt more people. Protest as much as possible and keep this in the media, make them pay attention and do our best to make sure the guilty parties are punished. RIP Oscar Grant

this shit is unreal. that gun happy fuck needs to be shot in the back as his friends watch. and now there's reports saying that he mistook his gun for a taser... bullshit. i've never seen the types of weapons that police carry but i'm sure i'd know the difference between a gun and a fucking taser. i'm sorry that anyone had to witness this and i was very hesitent to watch the video but i am so glad that someone got it all on camera so that it can be used against the cop. it was obvious that the kid wasn't struggling to the point where a fucking gun or even a taser was necessary. this shit is happening too much and it needs to come to an end. if i would have been in the area, there's no question i would have been at the protest. i'm glad that people are getting their voices out there - DON'T LET THIS BE SWEPT UNDER THE RUG. this shit needs to end. we need to come together, become a force, make things change, not only for this 22-yr-old father, but for all who were wronged, for all who have wrongfully died. no one else should die because a so-called "protector" thinks that a guy lying on the floor with a knee to his neck is dangerous.

Rebellion in Oakland Yesterday!!! We need to continue to fight against the Police and stop reacting, for this happens all the time and luckily this one was caught on tape. The cops tried to confiscate footage after the shots, and witnesses refused to give up their cameras. Clearly, this is a murder, and the cop is on vacation. He should get the Death Penalty or life sentence, simliar to what anyone of us would have received if this were us who pulled the trigger. The Bart spokesperson is clearly missing the point, and is wrong for sympathizing with the COP'S emotional problems. Fuck what the cop is feeling because he killed A young black man who did nothing.

whether or not it was a mistake, officers are trained to use restraint in these situations. he obviously intended to reach for his gun, because a gun weighs 3 times as much as a taser. also, the victims priors are completely irrelevant because the officers had no knowledge of that when this happened.
i live a few miles from this station and ride the BART several times a week and this gives me no faith in their law enforcement, or the city for that matter.

Not being from the States this hasn't been brought to my attention but this is nothing else but an execution. Never in my life have I been this angry, moved to tears watching this horrific tragedy. And even if this must be brought up in the news to bring justice, I can't helt but feel sad and ashamed of witnessing this boys death. This whole incident is crazy! Fruitvale is my neighborhood BART station. Looking at the video of the Officer, he looked possessed..He just calmly stood up, grabbed his gun and fired! They say he might have thought he was reaching for his tazer gun. In any case he didn't look too concern after he shot the victim. Crazy!
