Stevie Wonder Honored By Library Of Congress
Posted by gingerlynn on Sep 04, 2008

Stevie Wonder has received the second ever Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song (the first having gone to Paul Simon). Not only has Wonder been offered this honor, but he's also been offered a commission by The Library to compose original material, placing Stevie alongside other composers who have received commissions such as Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, and Paquito D'Rivera. He'll be honored Feb. 23, 2009 in the Great Hall of the Library where he'll perform. According to James Billington from The Library of Congress, this award is for those "whose creative output transcends distinctions between musical styles and idioms, bringing diverse listeners together, and fostering mutual understanding and appreciation. Stevie Wonder's music epitomizes this ideal."
