RIP Odetta

Posted by gingerlynn on

Last night one of our heroes died.  Odetta, who's folk music became the sound of the Civil Rights Movement, passed away at 77.  I feel blessed that I was able to see her perform live a few years back at The Apollo.  Though a tiny bit shakier than on her recordings, her voice still retained such warmth and depth, even in her 70s. Her poise was so graceful and proud, and she sang beautifully, even when it was clearly hard for her to stand.  Everyone who watched her perform could understand how she had such a huge influence on the likes of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Janis Joplin. She will be missed. Read the New York Times obit and watch their video interview with Odetta (inside the obit article) for more.

Wow, what a staple in black history/music. Your legacy will live on. A true VOICE OF THE PEOPLE. Rest in peace. No longer shall you feel like a motherless child, YOU'RE HOME.
