Jay Smooth and John Legend Weigh in on NY Post-Obama-Fiasco

Looks like racism is alive and well. If you haven't heard about the NY Posts' latest Obama related F-up, read this. Jay Smooth lends his perspective on the situation in this video. Watch and discuss. Also, read John Legend's open letter to the New York Post, in response to this situation.

That was a well written rebuke, by JL, of a paper that has a sordid history of printing hostile rhetoric against people of color, whether they’re politicians, political leaders and/or entertainers. Blacks that are charged with crimes are routinely called “Mutts” by Post writers. But they finally broke the straw with this last episode. I’m sure no Okayplayers read that rag anyway.

Addressing ignorance is important. For centuries black folks weren’t able to speak out against their oppressors. Protests for some mean nothing because they haven’t had to do so. I am in support of boycotts and protests because they work. Work? Yes. Maybe not over night, but for those of seriously take it on, it works MAJOR! The NY Post has always been trash….let’s can it!

I saw it and never thought it was at all racist. The person who wrote most of the stimulus package was David Obey. Obama just signed it. And from what I have read about this guy who made the cartoon, if he wanted to be racist, he would have just come out with it and made it obvious.
I do realize, though, that most people would see this as “Oh they talking about the stimulus package? and there is a picture of a monkey? they must be talking about Obama!” They had to know that was going to happen. So they deserve what they get.

*Yes, I am black. No, I am not a conservative/republican.

We have a situation in the UK where there is some sort of war on ‘anti-political-correctness’. Where polititians, there children, the royale family and their socialites are running round making derogatory remarks about blacks and non-brit’s. Checkout the Gollie Wog incident being defended as innocent and all the ‘public’ support.
Language & behaviour have to change and those who flaunt ignorance need to be held responsible.

    Feelin the world-wide struggle,
    NR.

Jay Smooth-absolute co-sign! This is what A.G. Eric Holder was talking about when he said that we are a nation of cowards and we to creating a dialog about race with other people. If we were as eager to be ahead of other countries in race relations as we have been in other endeavors such as medicine, the space race, etcetera, maybe this cartoon would have never come out. Is not about being over sensitive, it’s about compassion and using a little common sense.
I don’t think boycotting The Post will be a effective way promote change in behavior or to cause those involved to do some much needed soul searching.

But in an almost like 48 Laws of Power -rule-kind-of-way, some times it’s best to either ignore, or not make such a fuss about it. Write a letter! Not only to The Post but the businesses that advertise on that rag.
