Tired of hearing wack rappers rhyming over the legendary J Dilla's beats? Then this should be some refreshing news. On June 2nd Nature Sounds will be releasing Jay Stay Paid. J$P is a 25 track collection of unreleased (some have leaked) Dilla beats mixed and arranged by Pete Rock. The project is mostly instrumental, but includes vocals from Black Thought, DOOM, Raekwon, Illa J, Blu, Havoc, M.O.P. and more. This isn't some haphazardly put together album. Ms. Yancey AKA “Ma Dukes” serves as the executive producer to keep her sons vision in mind. Says Ma Dukes: "This album combines what he did in the beginning of his career, what he did in some of our early hospital stays, which was very deep, and some stuff pulled from old floppy disks & DATs. Its mind blowing…this is like the missing links to Dilla's legacy." Believe me when I tell you, the beats that I've heard on this album are out of this world. This song is a definite banger! I think that more people that consider themselves to be Hip-Hop heads are, after his death, recognising his music and are embarrassed to say they never listenned to this dude while he was alive. it’s annoying when hipster clowns try to act like they’re the sh*t cause they bought a shirt. Whatever though. I chose not to waste my life getting pissed off because some skinny jean idiot is jacking my music. Dilla was too good. R.I.P.
I gotta say.. I am really liking the older Black Thought’s voice. He’s got a cool rasp that he didn’t have in the old days, like he took a page from Dice Raw. I like it a lot more – it lets him stand out as a rapper when from a commercial standpoint a lot of people are looking for that from the Roots.
