De La Soul – Are You In? EPK x “Forever”

Shame on me for not mentioning De La Soul's new album with Nike, Are You In?, earlier but I'll make up for it today, now that it's out and available on iTunes. This project is the latest in Nike's Original Run series, which has included collaborations with Aesop Rock, A-Trak and more. The albums are designed as musical aides for athletes as they workout/run/train etc. The format of the album is supposed to correlate with your workout, starting off slow then peaking and coming back down all within the time frame of a typical workout (40 minutes and change). I played the album while working out yesterday and I have to say I'm really impressed with it. The songs are all laced with subliminal motivational lines to inspire your workout (i.e the title Are You In = R-U-N). Watch the EPK above where they talk about making such a challenging album for Nike without compromising who they are. I'm adding one of my favorite tracks from the project, the final one, "Forever." To further make up for my negligence, hit the jump to watch Mos Def perform a cover of a De La classic, "Stakes Is High." Shoutout to JNOTA for the assist.

Good Drop! I hear alot of new emcee’s saying “it’s time for the young folks to take over the game” Me being young I see that the older hip-hop genration had more content an originality inside the music …Less biting

Is it just me, or has Dave completely superceded Pos in terms of lyrical longevity and ingenuity? Pos sounds so uninspired these days.

I can’t say enough about DeLaSoul. Anyone that sees my comments on here always see shoutin’ out DeLa’s greatness. i This song got me HYPED UP!! Damn! I love it. I don’t understand how people aren’t jockin’ The DeLa! Dope lyrics… good concepts… and for the most part very original production. Always original when DeLaSoul’s involved. Come people!!!! DeLa is the epitome of what real hip-hop is… what it can be… what it should be!

did u hear thew upgrade off of j-live’s then what happened? lp?

pos came nice, and the track was instant classic

  6. avatar Whoa!

@ plug five. I don’t think Dave superseded Pos I think Pos started taking a more direct lyrical approach after Balloon Mind State( e.g. Stakes is High) I always get the impression he’s trying to drum the theme of his verse or the song into your head so it don’t go over your head. Dave is Dave is Dove is Trugoy so that abstract element is their signature but the balance makes for a greater cohesiveness which is why “Stakes” was and is such a classic. oh…and Are You In? is my favorite title for ’09 so far. Simple yet Clever;-p

    King De La.

    NOTES.

  38. avatar bigbluayinde

Forgive my ignorance. The track sounds very close to the AOI albums, which I like.. Looking forward to their gig in NC in August.
To comment on plug five comment: Pos is still dope (showing my age). He always had a laid back style to his rhymes which involved allot of word play. It always depended on the song whether Pos threw more or less (figurative) energy in his rhymes. Two examples would be Saturday and Ring Ring Ring. These are only my opinions. Dave has always been good go back a listen to his verses on Break of Dawn: on Balloon Mind State and Itssoeasy (forgive my spelling of the title): on Stakes is high. Also just like BigOHstatus: De La saved my life I used to listen to Stakes is High everyday when I was going threw a rough patch. Looking to cop the album

  39. avatar B42Pac

De La Soul is still banginn’ and brainy in an even more dumbed-down world than they found when they first hit the scene. Love it!!!!!
