Breaking News: KING Magazine Closing
Posted by dantana on Mar 31, 2009

We don't often post rumors, despite the number of them that cross our desks daily (many of which end up being true). I felt like posting this one though. We just got word that KING Magazine (aka Butts and Rims) is closing shop, not even releasing it's next issue. In this strained economy, the already dying print format is suffering big time. It is upsetting to hear of people losing jobs, but can this be considered a victory for women (in particular black women) who struggle against objectification at every turn? I have to admit, I enjoy the images, but I know it can't really be good for raising the standards of our society. What do you think?

Wow some of y'all getting nasty and defensive make me laugh so hard. Like the mag is your life and it's a drug you can't get off of. Get the hell over it and find another mag. King isn't the only one that caters to the needs of well...you know. For that matter yes it IS for men but I know plenty of females both straight and otherwise that pick up the mag. And whoop de damn doo if some of us DO think the mag objectifies women. Yeah they choose it and make the serious dough off of it, but, think about how some of these women are ogled and treated in real life. Most men have the sense to look beyond what they do on the camera. But the rest act like horny stone fools hence the objectification.
It sucks that people have to lose their jobs, though. Hoping they can get on their feet again someday. So not really celebrating here as objectification as a whole will go on due to what else the media has in store, and again...the loss of jobs. Ain't nobody trying to diss if you read correctly. Reading is your friend. NO DUH there was more to the mag than the women. But be honest--how long did you read the articles and how long did you look at the hot women?
HMMMM.

Dam so that's why I can't find that mag with Ms. Christina Milian on the cover...! Ahem....objectification you say? I don't wonna hear nothin' about that type of shyt right there. Men don't have to degrade women cuz certain ones do it to they dam them selves. Now I’m not sayin' that men don't do it. But women have the right to choose if they want to be put in a situation where they’re posing in magazine such a "KING". They’re getting paid to stand there and look pretty. What’s wrong with that?! Nothin’ cuz the bills are getting’ paid and the kids are gettin’ what they need and/or want. If you wonna stop someone from disrespecting others then raise your children to not do so. Point-blank-period. I’m some one who lost their job and it ain't fun havin' no means of income at all. So I don't think it's a win for anyone because when "KING" mag is capable of getting the business bacc up and running then that's most likely what's gonna happen....

regardless of how you feel about the mag, a lot of good folks are out on the street now, collecting your tax dollars for unemployment. This magazine industry is collapsing and a lot of people who made a living from it are out of luck. The magazine existed because there was a demand for it, it wasn't charity work!

HATE HATE HATE----King was and is a "Men's" magazine, plain and simple. If you were not the least bit interested in flipping through the pages of that mag, then you probably need to check the expiration date on your "man" card.

I am glad many of you have found an elevation in life where you have identified an appreciation for what life has to offer that is beyond backs, rims, and henessy. Society can certainly use you to fulfill those roles to the greatest of your ability and beyond but that is no reason to put down what other people like. I personally beleive that gay and lesbian behavior is a detriment to the survival of the human race, even more so than few butts hanging out but I understand that their are people who have that lifestyle so their needs and interest deserve to be met. Not everyone is on every level. So if the King guys identified a market of people that could be well served within the parameters of the law so be it. It seems for those of us that make it to a point of higher intellect we tend to act like elitest. For some reason we feel like just because we are Black that we will be brought down with every tarnishing black image. Fortunately, that is slowly becoming no longer the case. We are just about on that level of white people that had always hope to be that many of us measure ourselves against. We have low life scum just like white people, those with explicit taste just like white people, intellectuals just like white people and now even acheived President status just like white people. We are even one better that white people. We haven't allowed ourselves to elect a complete idiot to be President LOL! One Love People. Love all of it because it's all us.

Personally I think every magazine with a Black demographic is a joke. Even the "serious" and "affluent" ones. They write like they think we are toddlers and it's just the same old, backyard hackneyed bullshit. They can all go under.

HI.: ...
I really don't care if KING closes or not. I do feel sorry for all the employees that now have to go through the same horrid ordeal of finding a job that I just went through. Seriously though, women are only objectified if they themselves feel like objects. A man can treat a woman like an object, but it's ultimately up to that woman if she will accept that treatment and allow that to make her feel like an object. Sure, you ladies can be mad at a bunch of men looking at what they feel are beautiful women; or, you can direct a little more concern towards these women that you are being vicariously objectified through. OR, you can maybe examine what it is within yourself that makes you feel like you need to defend these women who have been paid for their time and effort, and apparently don't feel the same way about themselves that you feel about them, or yourself because of them. Myself, I must plead the Hephner and state that I only read KING for the articles. or, the lack of articles of clothing. Whatever.

I hate to see any business add to the already high unemployment rate, but I really hope this sends a message to the other so called "Men's" magazines that T&A alone is not all were interested in. Smarten up magazines, were a lot smarter than you give us credit for.

You must be a woman or never really read the magazine. Its fucked up the magazine is a wrap. The fact that you got on your soapbox to diss it is really fucked up. Thats like you niggas who think every album is wack if Questlove ain't on it doing production or some shit.Or you get mad if a person like Common is making power moves. Ya'll niggas kill me like if the shit ain't on VH1 Soul it's wack. You nigga know who you are. Keep reading those magazines with them skinny ass ironing board women. Those women in that magazine were beautiful thats the way I saw them.Stop focusing on the negative. That scarf must be wrapped to tight around your neck.
Oh yeah I love a fat ass.
And that picture up top look like her puss stink
