Badu's New Amerykah Racks Up 2008 Top Album Accolades

Erykah Badu's fifth studio album, New Amerykah Part One (4th World War), has been racking up the end of the year accolades including being named the #1 album of the year by the Associated Press, #4 top albums by the New York Times, top 5 albums by USA Today, and #9 by MTV, to name a few.  While there is no set street date, fans should expect Part Two to drop in the first half of 2009.  Continue reading to find quotes from NYT and MTV as well as more praise for Erykah, who you should feel free to congratulate in the comments section!

New York Times Names New Amerykah #4 Top Albums of 2008

4. ERYKAH BADU “New Amerykah: Part One (4th World War)” (Universal Motown). Far removed from current R&B, Ms. Badu plunges into deep, strange funk to ponder her own psyche, the desperate state of the ghetto and the state of the nation. The grooves are sparse, jazzy and hollowed out while her multiplied voices drift in with unsparing observations, advice and arguments. It’s a late-breaking successor to Sly and the Family Stone’s “There’s a Riot Goin’ On,” and just as uncompromising; Ms. Badu places the seductive "Honey" at the end of the album as a sweet reward.

MTV Names New Amerykah The 9th Best Disc Of '08`

9. Erykah Badu, New Amerykah, Part One (Fourth World War)
Time isn't really important in Badu's New Amerykah, which is why she jumps from the smoke-filled streets of the 1970s to the darkened and desperate projects of the present day to the post (pre?) apocalyptic future without much concern for the narrative arc. What is important is the message she conveys throughout those travels: that no matter how hard we try, things keep falling apart. They have been and they are and they will continue to do so, unless we wake up, stand up and — most of all — fight. So she puts the gun to our backs, orders us to march headlong into the darkness. She might not tell us where we're going — or what we'll see when we get there — but no one ever said revolutions were easy. This is a story told through stony beats, crackling samples and smoky voices, and rather terrifyingly so. Welcome to post-millennial tension.

More top album nods from around the country: Dallas Observer, Denver Post, Seattle Times, Washington Times , Vibe Magazine, The Charleston Post and Courier, The Boston Phoenix, The Idolator, Florida Today, Monterey county – The Herald

She is on point with everything that she puts her mind to and hands on. She brings light when there is nothing but dark! Her mind is like a black widow when it bites it sticks; with nothing but sting to the brain, nothing but knowledge to spit she is the sh$T. She is 100% ture to the thing we call Game!

Erykah Badu is the most important vocal artist to emerge from the USA since the late, lamented Curtis Mayfield. Alongside the equally brilliant & unique Meshell N'Degocello, she has forged a powerful & utterly compelling musical/activist path & in doing so has constantly challenged & redefined not just herself, but African-American music. The best jazz musicians do this all the time, but outside that noble tradition, this is very rare indeed. Nuff respect! And if I get my way, Ms Badu will be wrong about 1 thing: there will be at least 1 building named after her.

Peace.

In this day and age of fast food music with questionable subject matter and content, Ms. Badu presents us with soulful grooves containing molotov messages. Her sense of urgency in her music reminds me of early Chuck D, while her ability to connect with her audience is unmatched by any other artist. Its fitting that most R&Brick chicks are composing songs about stripping on a dude's video phone, after (scratching my head) demanding an engagement ring, Erykah's message are deep rooted into the fabric of universal consciousness, and struggle.

Its ironic that artists such as Erykah aren't invited to sing at political events i.e. inaugaration balls and such. But I learned that in this current Now, most things don't make any sense.

To each their own I guess... I adored all of her previous albums and was really looking forward to NA... Unfortunately, I was greatly disappointed in it. Now believe me, that is not because I wanted more of the same but because the album seemed unremarkable, disjointed and convoluted. It never had an impact... on any level. And to the greater public I don't believe it causght on with them either. It fizzled and dropped off the radar.

IT'S ABOUT TIME, Erykah Badu is one of the most influential artist of our time. I've been a big fan since ON and ON. Her lyrics and funky rhythms catch me completely. When I hear her voice, it's like angels singing in your ears. And best of all Erykah is not afraid to express her views about what she believes. That's something I truely hold close to my heart, as some artist tend to focus on what these record labels want and not staying true to the art form. THANK YOU MS. Badu, your words are a TRUE inspiration in my life.........

The album has been on steady rotation in my car and my home (yes, I purchased 2 copies). I can't seem to get enuff of Erykah's deep funky stuff. Its different so those programmed to the radio -ish have slept. However, since Erykah is a master teacher, I stay woke! Good to see the media is "up" too.

This is good news for artists. Erykah not only stepped out of her own comfort zone, but took her listeners along for the ride. Some critics of New Amerykah felt the turbulence mid-flight, but failed to realize that it would still be a smooth landing. The ancestors are smiling as Ms. Badu carries on the legacy of making 'real good music'. Her artistic authenticity will inspire 1,000's of artists around the world.
