Audio: Raphael Saadiq “Love That Girl”

Back in May
okayplayer had the pleasure of being one of the first outlets to report on Raphael Saadiq‘s upcoming album The Way I See It.  The twelve song masterpiece is a throwback to that classic 60s soul.  “Every record I’ve ever made has had those influences…The Temptations,
Al Green, The Four Tops and so on,” Raphael explains.  “This album is the
culmination of a life time of experiences informed by the music i grew
up on.”  For the next four weeks we will be posting a new song from the record.  Here is the first.  Check back every Monday for the others!  The Way I See It is in stores September 16th.

There is nothing like real music to put a smile on my soul. Man, this track managed to break my patented smirk into a full-blown toothy grin. Elijah Muhammad would be so disappointed in me…

Nice work, Raphael. Looks like my CD collection will grow on 9/16…

  3. avatar BlueKLani

Whatever causes my husband to break his “patented smirk” is noteworthy; but to cause a “full-blown toothy grin”… now that is AMAZING!

After listening to the track – I understand. I’ll be tuning in each week and anticipating the album drop!

  4. avatar ahem!

    BlueKLani: Funny….vewwwwy funny…

DHogg: SONS OF SOUL made me revisit good music that I’d forgotten and introduced me to some of my father’s favorite artists’ styles. I hope the rest of the project is this nice.

  27. avatar Nile: The SoapBox Killer!

That was really nice and this album has been mentally pre ordered.

  28. avatar Masterteacher

“Amy Winehouse” brought this sound back a couple of years back. Now I see it has finally crossed over to the states in the form of “Solange” and now “Raphael Saadiq” nice sound very groovy and relaxing. Reminds me of better days and happy people.

Peace and light! (I have lone to stay awake…a beautiful world I’m trying to find)

  29. avatar Saint15

Amy Winehouse brought this sound back? Is that right….?

  30. avatar Invictus

I can never get enough of this brother. I’ve been a Ray fan since way back in the day. I can’t wait until the sounds hit the streets in full. go out and but this shit… it’s for sure to be the bomb!

  31. avatar Nyota

    To “MasterTeacher”

PLEASE stay woke. Amy Winehouse didn’t bring back SHIT. She stole a style of music that was invented by BLACK FOLKS and gets all this critical acclaim for it. And BTW, Rafael Saadiq was a member of the group Toni Tone Tony and has been reflecting his light of creativity way before that crackhead Winehouse, hell, even Solange was recording before her.

  32. avatar Masterteacher

Nyota: …& Saint15: …Need to get on the late bus. Do your research people! Who before Amy has done an entire 60′s inspired album, in how many years? Amy has been on the music scene longer than “Solange. Amy’s album “Frank” came out in London, back in “2003’ When did “Solange have an album before that. And did it sound 60’s inspired? Amy is the real deal. Nyota” you sound like a true racist. “Black people don’t own that sound” Her color has nothing to do with her talent! Amy Winehouse is the real deal I’m sorry if you disagree, but who cares it’s the truth. When I said she brought the sound back! I meant she brought the sound back! The 60′s sound and feel, and she did it so well, to me she left all those other peeps in the dust. She has amazing talent she can sing her ass off! And yes she did make that sound (60′s) her own. I don’t care what you have to say or your opinion, because the truth doesn’t need to argue. No disrespect to ‘Raphael Saadiq’ or “Solange” but you got to give talent its props.

(What if there was no NIGGAS only Master teachers? I stay woke!)

  33. avatar History of the Llama

They’re both dope(Amy and Saadiq) can’t we leave it at that. Just be glad your getting the music. Something to wake up the tired R&B scene

  34. avatar g.ashley

    that’s what’s up!

  35. avatar Iraqi_g

Cannot stop listening to this song! Brings back that old school 60′s Marvin Gaye sound..

Has put a big smile on my face, that’s what music is about! thanks Raphael you did it again :)

  36. avatar Iraqi_g

PS- was it really Amy Winehouse bringing back that sound or Mark Ronson? Food for thought..

  37. avatar Jbridge

Amy?? yes she is good…but the Dap Kings are the real reason for the sound on her last album…don’t get me wrong I loved it…hope I will love this as much as the Amy and Sharron Jones for that matter…but the Amy album before that did not sound anything like the one she had come out last year….reason being Mark and the Dap Kings……and for real White…Black who cares..just make good Soul music (sidenote I am black) The question is why did so many black producers, artist, execs? abandon this style of music….bring back real musicians

  38. avatar DIRTY DUNNZ

Finally, I’m so glad that somebody gets it! This sounds way more vintage than previous attempts made by other artists. The mix is even vintage with good use of filter. Good string arrangement and spatial acoustic sound. As you can see, I’m diggin it. Not to mention the pics.

  39. avatar SashaBe.

    Poundcake, you’re hilarious!!
I have to say though, all this Winehouse non-sense: does it really matter if she’s white? That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Really. You can’t think that there aren’t white people, (or any other people), that don’t like our music. So what if Amy liked it enough to sing it…?? She didn’t “steal” anything….(lol)
In any case, she never said she was ‘bringin it back’ AND furthermore, it’s not like anyone said she CREATED it……………because then there would be a reason to get touchy* lol

  40. avatar oakland dub

    i hella love it. – ©

  41. avatar DetroitCityKev

Phenominal, Raphael Saadiq definitely has captured the sound of Motown that we know and love… especially here in the “D”

  42. avatar moodyhl

Hotness! For all those talkin bout “who brought what sound back”, take a listen to Lenny Kravitz (Circa 1989 – Let love rule). Fact is music is music, I’m just glad some appreciation can finally get sent to the originators from back in the day! Lets hope the radio shows some love!

  43. avatar !Manny!

Oh yeah… This is Hot! Im digging the throwback sound.

  44. avatar npj03

YOU IDIOTS KILL ME!! Half of you aren’t even old enough to remember tony toni tones’ first album. Most of you didn’t even know who the hell Charles Ray Wiggins AKA Ray Ray AKA Raphael Wiggins AKA “RAPHAEL SAADIQ” was until his first solo effort smashed you over the head. Amy Whinehouse(God bless her drug addicted soul) is wonderful. Very talented at what she does. But let us be very clear about this: Raphael has been doing this for years people. (EVEN BACK IN THE DAYS WHEN HE WAS PLAYING BACKUP FOR PRINCE!!) He’s always gone against the “so-called R&B” grain. Do your homework on this cat. It is far more extensive than you can imagine. That old sound has never died. It’s just been hijacked a few thousand times by foreigners and these goofy ass fake hip hop and r&b radio stations who actually think that the music they play is actually true “hip-hop” and/or “R&B”. May God bless your ignorant souls. Only YOU can prevent forest fires,(80′s reference) but all of us can stop the ignorance. DO YOUR HOMEWORK ON THIS MUSIC!!!

One more thing, I hope I didn’t offend anyone because if i did, YOU MUST BE GUILTY. LOL.

  45. avatar Tmurray

You did your thang’ at the BlackCat in DC Last nigth. Beautiful show!!
