Here at OKP we try to hip y'all to some international sounds whenever possible. On March 30th, Mulatu Astatke has a new album coming out entitled, Mulatu Steps Ahead via Strut Records. Mulatu, an Ethiopian musician, is widely known as the father of Ethio-Jazz (fusing Western style jazz with traditional Ethiopian sounds). Below you'll find Mulatu's classic "Yegelle Tezeta" (originally recorded in 1969), which should sound familiar as it was sampled on "As We Enter," the first single off of Nas & Damian Marley's upcoming collabo album, Distant Relatives. Be sure to check out Mulatu Steps Ahead on March 30th (and check out the OKP review of his last release).

this was also sampled by Oh No on his Ethiopium album, and was on the Broken Flowers soundtrack, which is also awesome.
Just saw this immediately after watching Mulatu’s Red Bull Music Academy lecture, which is worth checking.

@eazy good call on the broken flowers soundtrack, would have kept me up tonight wondering where i heard this. so good!
It should sound familiar because it was on the broken flowers soundtrack. I think it’s quite obvious to sample this. Anywhere the Nas & Damian Song is pretty good…
But you should know Mulutu since Broken Flowers (& you should know the jarmusch-movie of course…) By the way: His LP with the Heliocentrics is also really dope!
I sampled this song yeeeeeeeeeaaaarrrrs ago on a track called “Song For The Malnourished”. It is an obvious track to sample. I just hope this shit doesn’t end up in 40,000 songs now because of Damian Marley and Nas. I would feel weird rocking it.
Much respect to Mulatu Astatke.
Peace and Blessings
Sketch tha cataclysm.
