Audio: Kanye West "Love Lockdown" (UPDATE)
Posted by Shamz on Sep 16, 2008
Everyone seemed to have a very strong opinion on this song when we posted the live version from the VMA's. Now we have the full length CD quality version with that beloved vocoder in full effect. So now what do y'all think? Kanye's album now has a title, 808's and Heartbreak, with a tentative release date of December 16th.
UPDATE: Kanye mentioned on his blog that a new version was coming and today it is here. It has been mastered, re-sung and the drums have been switched up. It's a little lighter on the autotune, we think it's an upgrade. 'Ye, Plain Pat, Rhymefest, KiD CuDi, Jay-Z.. are all chillin' and recording in Hawaii right now.

Anybody who uses that vocoder shit should be shot. I don't care if it's Peter Frampton, Snoop, T-Pain, Daft Punk or Kanye. Could you make your music any more soul-less than using auto-tune?

the final version is better than the demo. i like the song. i dont know where all the negativity is coming from. you cant expect kanye to grow as an artist if he doesnt take chances and try new things. everybody turned on andre after the ATLiens album dropped. but between that and the time aquemini was released, they was back and calling him one of the best lyricist ever. this album will be different because of the loss of his mother and split with his girl. we as listeners often want to compare everthing an artist does to their best of works. we have to judge each individual offering as such. thats why i wasnt able to enjoy anything kweli put out until eardrum. i kept looking for the next reflection album. its a solid song. waiting for the album.

trying something different - it's the key to being an artist that remains relevant and interesting. if everyone liked it, now THAT would be wack. i dig kats that keep my ears guessing. you never know what you're getting with Kanye & i like that...

Once again, an outside-the-box concept!! I love the risks he takes. All those who don't like it will eventually love it. It's Kanye and he's got the formula.

yep. kanye has that magic something, he's damn catchy but too damn full of himself, hence why his voice is over this way too much. but it's a step away (again from wot he's done previous) and i love the concept but it's currently sounding wack and way too mechanical. (but i'm sure that'll change) it's a bit gay though and stupidly predictable and repetitive, but then his target audience did seem to become the teenage girls with that last album/tour. love/hate shit as per (the recent) usual.

Couldn't agree more with "Bristol Palin's baby daddy" Kanye knows how to get peoples attention.
Granted, this song sounded dumb first 3-5 times i played it but im digging it now. Within a couple months everyone will love and agree with this song, people are hating it now simply because their not use to it but once its played enough everyone will warm up to it and love it as they always do, it always goes this way.
The only reason Kanyes been getting hated on recently is because he keeps breaking the boundries and keeps thinking outside of the box granted "Love Lockdown" is no where near his stuff on The College Dropout cause it's for the better. You people cant expect him to continue the same mainstream of style for all his albums and keep that "Overnight Celebrity" feel because he's evovled and grown too much plus it would get boring, repeative and people would get tired of him. Its all about change, kanye's not afraid to change his style completely if he thinks its the right path. He has too much of an ego for his own good but he knows how to make good music, and in the end thats all that matters folks.
Keep doing your thing Kanye, even though he's a commerical superstar he always keeps it original and edgy and thats what i respect most about him, he still keeps it real and brings something new everytime around. Better that then becoming the next commericalized top 40 whore *cough*50 cent*cough*

If you put the whole autotune in the mindset of some kind of T-Pain thing it might sound shitty, but when you look at it as some kind of 'Eiffel 65' 90s inspired stuff, you put it into a totally different context (like how the piano sounds, etc.)

i gotta say..
much, MUCH better.
those drums at the end there are crazy..
i feel the vocals are mixed a little low, but im glad he eased off the autotune a bit and added that other robotic effect at some points sounds really cool.. and resung the hook with more feeling.
is it just me or are those 808 kicks off beat?? they seem to throw the flow of everything off a bit.
either way.. im sooooo glad he re-recorded this, its pretty much exactly how i'd want to the final version to sound like.

I can respect that Kanye's trying some new stuff, but this was just executed poorly. The singing in the newer version is an improvement, but autotune is just unattractive in general. They keys are just horribly. I honestly could do a better key pattern on my demo version of FL 7. The drums could've been so much better. This track could actually go somewhere, but instead it just stays in the same dismal groove.
I like the Ye's experimenting, but this was too much. I love soul Kanye, and I even liked some of the Graduation production, but this is no good.

6. I'd LOVE to hear this sung by someone who actually sings
Overall, the concept of this song is brilliant. Strangely executed, but brilliant. Embrace the positive, critique the negative, and hate yourself if you MUST hate. You're just mad cause he's FREE enough to TRY these things. While you have blog angst and cubicle claustrophobia.

Ok, now let me give you some food for thought!
Kanye is evolving constantly as an artist. I know, you say that you hear that all the time when someone makes dopey ass music, but the truth is Kanye is an evolving artist.
I remember the first time "Stronger" hit the internet people were talking all kinds of shtuff about it because they thought it was too pop, it was too mainstream, it had no hip-hop to it....and on and on.
So why all the hating?? I have to admit that I am a super biased commentor on this song but really give it a chance. I bet you that this version here is just a test version. Think if he lost the vocoder. If he is the artist we all know and appreciate then he will lose it or it sounds like nobody on this comment list will support him. Remember, though, he is the closest thing to acceptable left in hip-hop today. You cannot argue that point.
I understand the haterade and all that but seriously folks, give it a chance. You know that graduation was so much better than "Tha Carter III" so why are we hating on Kanye so much?? Lil Wayne was the closest we had to good and he stunk up the game with an album that sounded ten times worse than this one....

rapper's need to learn why they're not "singers". Kanye, you make beats, and you can rap. You're witty and clever, but you're NOT a goddamn singer. What's with these rappers thinking they have a singing voice? If you've gotta use the voice synth to hit certain notes STOP singing. This goes for you too, 50 (at least he stopped doing it so much)

Either way, I'd rather listen to this than lil' wayne any day.

I liked the live performance better than the studio track. I like the overall stripped down, and raw feeling. It feels empty and emotionless, just like a person feels after a break-up! That is the point, eh? If the final piece incorporates more of the drum and bass feel from the live performance, with a slightly tighter vocal performance, it should be alright. As a person who did not like "Can't Tell Me Nothin" at first, I have learned that when Mr. West goes through a creative growth spurt, it is best to give the new songs time to grow on you.

everyone got their ups and downs and hatin on someone like kanye for still tryin to do things differently from what HE usually does, while at the same time he's putting out dozens of other songs every year, for multiple artists, that's just plain ignorant. even having inspiration, will and energy to create at all while working that hard is admirable, and say what you want about that song but he's still DOING things compared to most peeps judging, HIPHOP IS PUNK if anything, so get down with some DIY before ya holla your opinion.

The only thing worse than a cat who can't sing, is a cat who can't sing while using a vocoder.
Why would you even want to use it. It's whack!!!! Commerical rap takes the whackest isht and makes it popular. I don't get it.

This is one of those songs you hate after the first hearing, then you love to hate, then you still love to hate, but, than you hate, however, you start to tell people about it, saying KanYe is fucked up and shit, however the song is stuck in your brain and you can't help but singing it. Then you secretly admit you like it, then you openly admit you like it, then you love it because it's a worldwide hit, and thousands of people sing along that song at every shows, and so many crazy remixes feat. Common, Mos Def, Andre 3000, or Q Tip will be released and you finally say to yourself that KanYe's a damn genius. In the meantime, your friends are feeling the same effects than you, and they feel really fuckecd up about it, but hey, they start to love Young Jeezy or admire Lil Wayne, and even worship T Pain... KanYe's a genius, and he's gone get more money and more fame, and more projects, and more worlwide tours with Common his man. I know some feel fucked up about it, but that's the way it is. Pop music shit or something.

||| Very interesting. I have really been waiting for something completely different from Kanye. It could use something... love the percussion... Interesting but anti-climatic melody. Piano gets a bit dull. The vocal effect was used with class and with good taste. Love? Escaping from Kanye's lips. He's really being an artist these days... Painting what he must. |||

Let me lend some creative criticism. First let's start with the positive. Though minimal the beat definitely makes a statement with the heavy boom and the additional drums add that drum line feel. Making for a sound that will catch the ear of most listener. Well constructed beat with the exception of the additional bits at the end. They seem like a first effort but I am sure this is not the final product so I won't focus on that.
Kanye tries his hand at singing and for an average Joe it would be an okay first effort but the breathing and timing seems off at various points. Maybe some vocal training might improve on it or maybe not, after all not everyone can hold a note.
More on the vocals I have to mention the use of the vocoder. I honestly don't mind vocoders over a vocal but honestly I think it was used to cover up some of the flaws and people use it for this reason too often. T Pain is a classic example of this. He might be able to hold a note but it's over done by T Pain in my honest opinion. Save the vocoder for hooks and techno tracks that embrace the electronic aspects of music.
Props to Mr. West for an effort to step outside his box but at the same time be weary of your short comings. If fine tuned you might be able to salvage this track. Possibly add a few short samples on love, a bit of rhythm poetry over the bridge and you might revamp a track that will be under heavy scrutiny if released on the new album.

I think either way people were gonna complain. it was gonna be "too kanye" or it was gonna be "too wack".
Personally, I think the track is fresh. I haven't heard anything like it out there! My personal favourite album is 'College Dropout' but all I'm saying is allow the growth in hiphop! let it happen..and see where it goes.

Wow..I really really hope this is not a FINAL Product because it is horrible....Kanyes live performance was heartfelt and artistic...and this is exactly the opposite....even still today you'd think that we would just grow more conscious within ourselves in this time of age but I guess money IS the root of all evil....what happened to the Kanye that loved hiphop...I am now convinced that Nas, and Lupe are the only hope and last of the golden era...and that T-wayne might be the worst thing that happened to HipHop...If I was Kanye and had as much money as he does..Why not take the gamble of making the real music that inspired him to be an artist in the first place..so what if he flops and what if he doesnt....money is not an object...but the greedy are called the greedy for that reason...the ringtone and autotune are evolving our beloved culture into the worst possible form i ever thought...I love hiphop and music in general...we gotta end this...whos with me???

ive been hating the fact that Ye has been using the Autotune effect lately as well.. i really thought, as an innovator, he would be one of the few people to keep doing his own thing, and not succumb to that stupid industry craze..
however i really liked the live version of this, the autotune was there, but it was more subdued and used sparingly for extra effect, and even though he cant sing for crap, he was singing really passionately.
THIS however... ugh. the Autotune is overpowering the words.. and he sounds so UN-passionate and so UN-inspired when he sings the hook, that you can barely make out what he's saying. like he's mumbling. maybe its intentional. but it sucks. even the piano part sounds cheesy compared to the live version. maybe its un-mastered and just a demo version. i hope. but if the album's really dropping in Dec, this might really be the finished version of the single.
DAMNIT. fix this up with less Autotune, a better sounding piano, and more Passion in the chorus and it would be amazing.

Again, the music is cool and I even dig the concept for the song. Kanye should definitely lose the vocoder and get a vocal coach instead of trying to mask the fact that he can't sing. A vocal coach could help him sound decent in less than a week's time. You can't think that you can step out there and try to accomplish the impossible without the proper preparation because disaster is bound to happen and this song is evidence of that fact. Somebody has TOO many YES MEN on their team otherwise we wouldn't have to hear this song in the state that it's in.

On the other hand, it is more infectious than Lollipop, so KanYe will earn I don't know how many million dollars with that. Knowing how much the music industry is fucked up, Okayplayer souldn't co-sign and post that. However, damn homie, this is fucked up, so I guess KanYe is laughing straight to the bank with it. And finally, I think this music sounds unfinished, so it is a clever strategy from him to make it remixed by those who know how to do it. This shit is a club banger, and a powerful hit. However this is musically fucked up. But hey, that's the wy it is. I ain't checking for KanYe no more. Peace folks.
