Nobody will ever make a version of Mos Def's "Umi Says" that will top the original, but I think Dasha made a strong effort with this cover. If you like what you hear, be on the lookout for her upcoming mixtape, Back 2 The Future, set to drop on the 14th at the homie Kevin Nottingham's spot.

straight up garbage version of a classic
check out Bonjay – Umi Shanks from a few years back
…This is probably my favorite song…
but she just messed it up.
This could have been better if they did their version of the original musical track instead of just sing over the instrumental.
it didnt suck.. But damn okayp… you guys are usually better at giving criticism..don’t just knock it… have a reason or keep the negativity to yourself
to me … she didn’t get it right … she didn’t capture the feeling of the song or the energy behind the vocals of the song. and there’s no creativity. she needed to make this song hers. i’ve heard, damn near, this same rendition at least 20 times in the past at open mics & stuff. her mechanics are “good” but not special… yet. i hear potential. a strong producer (not beat maker) may be able to mold her a great record. all that said … i’l still be getting the mixtape!!!

It’s not bad, just seems uninspired.
she has a nice voice and fits this “style” of song but she could have done a lot better by taking this song and making it her own buy TAKING IT AND MAKING IT HER OWN. We heard this beat before and love it and we will never associate her with it. IMO this is just a karaoke verison of a classic
you know who would killed it? Lauryn Hill.
yeah but…’she just tried to do the best that she can with what it is she has…’
It is okay, it just made me pull out the original
COOL REMAKE.
loved it…..
waiting to hear what else she has to offer on the mixtape!
DOPENESS
I think that if she switched the beat up it would compliment her vocals more. With the original beat, all you really thing is Mos’ original.
i didnt hear her heart and soul. she might have done better doing it with no beat. its just one of those songs that you cant stand to hear anyone sing but the origional artist. mos was in pain with his. like her voice, but not on this.
i’d love to hear bilal cover this one!
she sounds ok.. dont have the soul of mos tho, thats for sure
I’m not mad at it, but I agree she could have put her own spin on it and her vocals (nicely toned as they are) would have made a stronger impression. I look forward to hearing her originals.
At least mixtapes supply new lyrics. WTF does this add? This is some karaoke shit.
