Audio: Common “Be” (Original Version) (No DJ)

DJ Eves' latest mixtape, Laced with Gems, is clearly just that. I don't know how he dug this one up but here is the original J Dilla produced version of Common's song "Be" off Com's album of the same name. Which version do you prefer?

UPDATE: We now have the DJ-less version.

DJ Eves best better sharpen up them knives before he starts cutting up anything cause those cuts were gay. Dope joint tho.

  2. avatar Acro 1

Dope track. I’ll still stick to the album version though, flows better with the whole vibe of the album. Fresh joint nonetheless.

  3. avatar Kalo de 78

man, those cuts in the beginning just to water our mouth were mad wack. track in itself’s just ok.

  4. avatar THE MAD BLOGGER

Common sounds agressive! There were other tracks that Common & Dilla recorded for that album. Ye heard them and scrapped them. Then he had Lonnie spit those same verses over his beats. SMH…

  5. avatar Slick Ant

LOL @ y’all cracking on dudes cuts!
Common sounded like he was rhyming to get a deal!
The cuts……maybe I’m being goofy, but those wack cuts made my whole day.
    Peace OKP’s.

  10. avatar OK...P!

I have the ILLEST Dilla poster. a collage (of his face) of album covers of the different peeps he worked with. J Dilla and friends have changed my life.
    this tune is fire. PUNK!

  11. avatar Blix

HA!! I think I probably would have actually bought this album if it had more Dilla beats…track wouldn’t have fit the flow of the album that resulted, but I enjoy this track much better than at least 80% of that whole album!!

  12. avatar Pooz30

How could anybody not be feeling anything about this? It hit so hard!!!

  13. avatar Hey U

    Is this OFFICIAL?!!?!
As a student of Dilla’s production since ’94 I must say I have my doubts. Although the drums knock and have a lose swing to them, the bass line doesn’t sound like Dilla’s at all, not even his more neo-soul stuff. I call B.S. for now…maybe eat my words later.

  14. avatar barbiedollspimp

i like the original better, but this is dope. beat is amazing. common sounds good.

  15. avatar FAruk

if u ask me illtake dilla before west anyday… i do like the west version tho this one works better for common its got some deep black raw energy to it, the bangz way more than kayne lol .. the sample is hot ,, the horns are amazing ,, common soundz classic dan ever,, soo i dnt see y dis wasnt the 1 to b released, but i guess it wudnt fit with d other kanye produced traks,, it jus got the dilla sign on it,, if dilla dne d whole album it wud a great,, bcoz it seems to by judging on the lyrical content of the 2 versions common sounds more comfy on d dilla beat! R.I.P j

  17. avatar Austin Cat

now that i have listened to it a few times over and over..
it sounds like a Kanye beat.
Common sounds like he was back in 96 with that flow.

    good stuff overall.

    That’s crazy! One my favorite albums… “BE” … … …. … ….

  20. avatar Funk

I dont think it sounds like a Dilla beat either. Especially in the drums, its too simple and repetetive, sounds more like a Kanye beat, no disrespect. Its AIIGGHTT. Probably knocks in the car though.

stop the arguements, yo…J Dilla had beats like “Love is”, “its your world”, “dollar”, The Shining and Donuts…this beat does NOT have the 2005-2006 J Dilla feel his other joints had…the structure is REALLY not a Dilla track…i would say its Kanye West….definetely.

  25. avatar Rich the 16 yr old

Dilla?…..mmmmmmmm i dont know about that jo…Mr. West…mmmm maybe so bro.

  26. avatar dj crossfader

Cats be on here arguing whether its Dilla or not and be like it don’t sound like Dilla what is a Dilla sound I mean every joint he did sounded complety different from the last each beat was like a snowflake, but each beat like a snowflake was beutiful. Also I really don’t think OkayPlayer would say this was Dilla and it not be do you ? think about it seriously.

  27. avatar kazkaz

When you say that this track is not sounding like a Dilla Beat…you mean that a Dilla beat always sound the same and that’s disrespectful to Dilla (g.o.a.t)
Just because there are some voices samples don’t mean its Kanye Damn!!

  28. avatar dj crossfader

East Coast: Can suck a million dicks for real for his bullshit comment

  29. avatar dj crossfader

Does anyone else on here agree with me yes the Be album was Dope but why the hell was there a live track from Dave Chapell show just randomly put in there? did’nt make sence and totally messed up the whole vibe and flow of the album, just my opinion.

p.s go and cop that new Q-Tip record it’s definate fire, maybe best hip hop record of the year?

  30. avatar dj crossfader

mizzledahednizzle: yes EastCoast was wrong for his comment but he is a person aint he allowed an opinion? grow up

  31. avatar Slick Ant
