Legendary drummer Bernard “Pretty” Purdie created what may be the holy grail of break-beats with his album Soul Drums, one of the most sought after drum LPs among serious crate diggers. Purdie is now set to re-release Soul Drums (first time on CD + digital), his first solo album, which will include 8 bonus tracks rumored to be his “lost” sophomore LP (Alexander’s Rag Time Band) next Tuesday on Green Streets Entertainment. In case you don’t know, Purdie’s resume is way too long to list here, but he’s drummed with the greats, Aretha Franklin, The Beatles, King Curtis, Steely Dan, Cat Stevens, Joe Cocker, Herbie Hancock, Hall & Oats, Quincy Jones and many many more. We’re lucky to have this classic album back in circulation so be sure to check for it on October 14th. Listen to the title cut off the album below, tracklisting after the jump.

All de filipinos would dig dis cause if there were no filipinos, there would be NO B-BOYZ!!!
Bernard Purdie is so funky!! The funkiest drummer I’ve ever heard.
He invented his own style called the Purdie Shuffle. Listen to Steely
Dan’s Babylon Sisters & Home at Last to hear the Purdie Shuffle–soooo
funky!!
he´s the world most recorded drummer of all time.
AWESOME! Thanks for puttin’ me up on this! Can’t wait.
Peace & Blessings,
Gather ’round & listen closely children –
Bro. Purdie is probably the Best & Most Famous practitioner of something called “Fat Back” –
every Musician who grew up in the inner cities of America,
in the ’50s & ’60s, particularly the East Coast, knows that FatBack Beat –
if you were a trap drummer & couldn’t do a FatBack break solo, you weren’t gettin’ in the band, period.
just like the “Chicken-Pickin’” Guitar Lick,
FatBack is a Main Ingredient of Funk (RnB) -
just add “Walkin’ or Slappin’Bass” ,
some keyboards, some “Talkin’ Horns”
a Front person w/ a Strong Voice
& It’s On! …
I actually tried to get a quote from Questlove for the booklet but the folks at Okayplayer declined….. I just figured it would have been a good fit, legendary and contemporary, you know?
