A Trip To The Underground Pt.2
Posted by Shamz on Oct 03, 2008
Time for Part 2 of our A Trip To The Underground segment. In this edition I've got a little something for almost everyone; music from the East coast, West coast, down South, and over to the UK. Six songs just like the last time, but in this round we want y'all to leave a comment and let us know which artist/song you think is the dopest and whoever gets the most love will be seeing more attention on OKP in the future. Follow me after the jump to see who made this edition.
Playboy Tre "In My Mind"
Bambu "Iron Bam"
6th Sense "Love Lockdown"
XV "Funeral of the Tape Deck" feat. Donny Goines
Kidd "Understanding"
H-Twenty "Dirty South Anthem"

I think Bambu was the best: ...
Technically. He has the most potential other than XV(Who I like but sounds really really familiar*cough*Lupe, but he's young from what I've read in the comments). But anyway, I thought they were all unique, but Bambu for me.

I have to apologize to you because I misinterpreted your statement. I realized what you really meant after I posted. I guess I'm kinda defensive about Obama. But anyway, I would have to take Nas off your list. He's been "political" for a minute now. His last album may be more overt with it but Nas is not in the same company as Ludacris and Young Jeezy. At all.

What I meant was, all these other rappers - Young Jeezy, Nas, Luda - started making "political" music all of a sudden only when Barack started gaining momentum as the Democratic national candidate, but Bam has been making music to address the system since the beginning of his career. (Or at least since I've discovered him).
It's easy to jump on the bandwagon when the Presidential Candidate is black, but four years ago when Bush was still runnin strong, no one was saying SHIT.
I hate to agree but this is so true. Preach Homie!

bambu and kidd. in terms of the track on okayplayer, bambu has a dope track, but kidd i think has the more commercial appeal too judging from some of the other tracks on his myspace.
xv sounds a bit too much like lupe but hes still dope.
i think a lot of people on this site have underrated kidd and xv and there does appear to be a lot of people jumping on the bandwaggon or supporting their artist. musis is music people, it takes time and effort to create. if its good, say so and show them love. dont just show the artist you're ridigin with is good without regard for whatever talent we have on the site.

I listened to every track to give a fair trial run to the artists featured, and still give my vote to Bambu. Although I'll be honest and say I am biased in his favor. With that said, regardless of how many comments are made, Bambu has a community, from east to west coast, behind him, and I doubt the other artists featured on here can say the same. Bambu and the team of friends, family, artists, and fans that push his career forward will continue to bring his music and message to the masses with or without okayplayer. Each blog post, each album bought, every article and feature counts for what we are all working towards, and regardless of the final outcome I hope okayplayer realizes that Bambu is not just another emcee trying to get a big break. He is only one representative from an underserved community (in Hip Hop), paving the path for future emcees. He has already become part of history for the Filipino and Asian communities, so it's really on the rest of the world to catch up and recognize it.

Okay now its time for the man to speak.
First off Bambu is sick.....Second Okayplayer, you need to do more of this, getting other artists a chance to gain recognition, but I would advise seeking those who are young like 17-26 years old. Third, People should stop coming on Okayplayer hating on the people who give us the opportunity to come on this website and listen to new artists. This is where we here it first. Fourth, Lets get more songs on here that are different, that deliver a message or at least feel good. Cliche raps are getting old. Fifth, Check out these two brothers, literally brothers from LA Cobe Obeah and K.O Sunni Ali Ber.
I'm going to send their tracks soon.

I only listened to the Bambu track, and I don't believe the comment hype. It was underwhelming, and if that's supposed to be the best track out of all of these, I'm gonna stop listening right there.
Someone obviously told a whole bunch of people to go vote for a particular artist, and those who did seem to already have had their mind made up before listening to all the tracks.
Okayplayer doesn't need to give more attention to any more artists. This site has gotten way too saturated with that. How about just focusing on the artists who already make up the core in the first place? Okayplayer used to be more enjoyable to be at when it wasn't just a record company marketing tool and an endless hype machine.
It used to be smart.60

i think most of these artists here have something special about them all.
Playboy Tre and H twenty 0 are extremely talented artists with that southern swag.
Kidd and XV both have lots of versatility when it comes to their tracks. Ive checked out both of their myspaces and theyre both equipped to making songs for the radio, as well as songs which will make the listener think.
Bambu is a very talented lyricist and this song is extremely dope.
6th sense...i have to hear more from him.
In terms of putting these artists in order, I dont think its possible. It's difficult to judge. Id say they all bring something new to the table. It's important that sites such as okayplayer and we the listeners support all of them.

I second that emotion from MH&BACK. Thanks for giving us an opportunity for discovering new music.
I listened to each track and, personally, I would give each airplay...but I tip my hat to Bambu. At first, I thought it was going to be just another typical song from someone who (once again) jacked the old Black Sabbath riff. But once he started spitting, he totally flipped it. NIIIIIIICE!
Playboy Tre & H-Twenty tied for second. There are too many cookie-cutter Down South acts with the same sound, same flow, etc. (I'm from the Dirty...believe me, I know!) Both MC's brought something strong and fresh to their tracks, while staying true to their DS roots.
Let me not forget the tracks from both Kidd and XV. Clever lyrics, nice flow, tight production...you can never go wrong when you have your bases covered.
The only track I was not really sold on was from 6th Sense. Now don't get me wrong...I truly liked the beat (could be great as an instramental cut). But the rhymeflow & subject matter was so-so, at best. He may have other tracks that are wonderful...this is not one of them.
Once again, I'd like to give each track some airplay. You can forward them to ksym_hiphop@yahoo.com (radio edits only).

though i wanted to hate on playboy tre's name and bambu's beat, they came with the best introspection, flows and word play.
kidd did well in his choice of that madlib beat, but beyond that he was just alright.

BONIFACIO: obama vs. bam? what?
I wasn't trying to believe the hype. I thought to myself that BAMBU must have got all of his friends to post. BUT, his shit IS FIRE! I listened to every single song, and I must say: BAMBU and H20.

Anyway, I actually liked that 6th Sense cut. At first I thought it was a joke, but I really dug it the more I listened. XV was good too. I liked the concept of the song.
All the other cats sounded too familiar. And not in a good way either.

Bonifacio: Did you really say that Bambu has been political before Barack Obama came to "stir things up"? What in the world are you talking about? Maybe I'm confused. Either Bambu is running for president or Obama is trying to get a record deal. That seems to be your point.

It used to be smart.

He makes music for everyday people, not fake thugz or streetwear dickriders.
I like H20 too, but bambu has more to offer in terms of diversity and content. Check for yourself, 'cuz IRON BAM is not rilly the standout track if yah aks ME!
