Okay Acoustic: Tank and the Bangas

Fueled by the love and support of the people of Kings County, Tarriona “Tank” Ball and her Bangas held everyone’s heart in the palm of their hands.

Tank and the Bangas, boy, they know how to put on a show whenever in town. I was fortunate enough to have been invited by the band to watch them perform in Brooklyn back in July. They were in town to do a show later that night but decided to grace Kings County with their brand of homestyle gumbo flavor at the Metrotech Commons in Downtown Brooklyn. Lead singer Tarriona “Tank” Ball had already been milling around for about an hour, talking to passersby and trying out new riffs with keyboardist Merell Burkett.

Part of Tank and the Bangas’ success comes from that rich congeniality. It feels like you’ve known them for years once you begin talking with any member of the band. For me, Tank and I hit it off in-between soundcheck and the performance. We spoke on our mutual New Orleans roots, how the band’s First Look Friday did on the website and went down the rabbit hole in talking about personal relationships. It was a reminder that the appearance on NPR’s Tiny Desk was not just luck or chance—it was ordained that this group found national success.

In the background, @Okayplayer’s sound and visual crew set up their position to film the Okay Acoustic, which you can see above, and it was then that the air became static. More people (seemingly on lunch break) gathered around the makeshift gazebo and sat down in anticipation of something magical happening. The band was in place, doing a quick hit number before stepping off to the side to let Tank do her thing. Joined again by Merell Burkett on keys, the ultra-funky, one-of-a-kind songstress, Tarriona “Tank” Ball became bigger than life at that moment.
