Roots Picnic 2018 Cut Short Due To Severe Weather

Heavy rain, thunder, and lightning prevented Dave Chappelle and The Legendary Roots Crew from bringing out surprise guests for Roots Picnic 2018.

Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia played host to music fans of all ages as the 11th annual Roots Picnic was the beacon we all were drawn to. Okayplayer was in the building, certainly, and were excited that the advertised weather hadn’t really jumped off throughout the day. Well, at least that is until the headlining act hit the stage. Dave Chappelle was billed as the host for The Roots jam session featuring 2 Chainz, Brandy, and a host of other surprises.

Unfortunately, due to torrential downpours that brought the daylong concert to an end 10 minutes into the headlining set, we won’t be able to know just who was backstage ready to come out to bend flows and put on a great show. “Due to dangerous weather — we are forced to end the show,” a statement placed on the North stage big screen from promoter Live Nation read. The anticipation was high for the jam session as swaths of people left immediately after Lil Uzi Vert headlining 7:30 p.m. set at South Stage to go north and witness two of the greatest entities do what they do best.

Murmurs of guesses from Lauryn Hill to Chance the Rapper were bandied around by attendees, but ultimately, we never got a chance to see anyone other than Chappelle introduce The Roots, Black Thought masterfully decimating his 10-minute Hot 97 freestyle over Roots melodies, and an appearance from 2 Chainz that just left us saying, “Truuuuu.” While Questlove’s rolodex knows no bounds and there aren’t too many people who’ll say “no” to Dave Chappelle — the weather threw a huge monkey wrench into a concert series which was blessed to have gone uninterrupted despite weather reports citing a 60% chance of rain earlier in the day.

With the rains coming down, the thunder booming louder than the speakers Live Nation provided, and lightning shooting across the sky close to the venue — the 11th annual Roots Picnic was canceled indefinitely. We’re attempting to find out if there is going to be another chance to pull this off with better weather conditions later on in the year, but for now, check out what Quest had to say about the overall situation.
