Purple or Orange? Prince's Sisters Disagree About His Favorite Color

Prince was a mysterious figure.

However, there was one thing we all knew about him: purple was his favorite color.

At least that’s what we thought.

A couple of weeks ago, Prince’s sister Tyka Nelson revealed something that was jarring; she told the London Evening Standard that purple wasn’t his favorite color. She told the publication that it was orange: “it is strange because people always associate the color purple with Prince, but his favorite color was actually orange.”

(The Orange One? Doesn’t quite have the same ring to it.)

On Thursday, Prince’s half-sister Sharon Nelson spoke to the Associated Press. She said that “contrary to what has been said, purple was and is Prince’s color.”

Nelson want on to say that Prince “was fond of many colors in the rainbow, he especially loved the color purple because it represented royalty…the color purple always made him feel Princely.”

So…what’s the correct answer? We still don’t really know, which is actually perfect.

Earlier this month, A shade of purple named for Prince was announced. The hue was created by the Pantone Color Institute and is known as “Love Symbol #2.” The color is paying tribute to his Yamaha piano and the period of his career when he was just a symbol.
