Rare Canadian Pressing Of Prince’s ‘The Black Album’ On Sale For $27,000
Confirmed as the single Canadian variant of Prince’s The Black Album known to exist, this ultra-rare item is currently on sale at Discogs.
Prince constantly stays on music lover’s minds and with his birthday (and party) coming up, this bit of news will surely charge your sockets. Music historian and record dealer Jeff Gold of Recordmecca made an incredibly cool discovery when he met a former Canadian record pressing plant employee who used to work at Columbia Records in 1987.
As the story goes, this employee was pressing up Canadian versions of Prince’s The Black Album, when the label pulled the album and anything created was marked for destruction. “He kept one copy for himself,” Gold states. “He never realized its rarity or value until reading about the discovery of the U.S. copies in ‘Rolling Stone,’ and contacted me.” Gold did his due diligence and inspected the album in person, the Canadian pressing is, to date, the only variant of The Black Album to exist.
Discogs currently has it listed in its marketplace for $27,500 USD.
If you have some spare change lying around then this is surely one that you should have in your collection. And if by chance you do cop it and know us here at Okayplayer, we would love to hear how it sounds!
