Spitters dominate the Mixtape Monday roundup this week. A handful of solid rising talents lead the pack, including Billy Early, Hus Kingpin, Briss Dont Miss, Matt Ford, Hippy Soul and Khary & Lege Kale.

Starting off with the OG’s, Mr. Lif & Akrobatik a.k.a. The Perceptionists resurface with their highly-anticipated project Resolution. King Mason reworks Kendrick Lamar’s latest with the DAMN. (Remixes) and Trackademicks serves up an ethereal, house-inflected heater entitled Fashion. Billy Early, Briss, Hus Kingpin, Hippy Soul and Matt Ford put in major work for the new class with hard hitting projects that double as great introductions to their respective sounds. DJ Ill Digitz and DJ Parler bring up the rear this week with the latest episode of The Midnight Snack from WAXX.FM.

Mulatto Beats - .22 Summers

Chicago sound man Mulatto Beats offers a healthy taste of the Windy City underground with the arrival of his .22 Summers tape. The project features appearances from Lucki, Thouxanbanfauni, Warhol.SS, Alex Wiley, Trapo, Qari and Sen Morimoto. Mick Jenkins and King Louie also guest on two standout tracks.

Trackademicks - Fashion

Trackademicks returns with the 7-track instrumental tape entitled Fashion. The project finds him digging '80s r&b and pop classics to deliver an airtight collection of atmospheric funk jams. The cherry on top is the Sade tribute “Helen” featuring 1-O.A.K. This project is one to drive to or just play on repeat.

King Mason x Kendrick Lamar - DAMN. (Remixes)

King Mason follows his work on The Ashby Project with a rework of Kendrick Lamar’s critically-acclaimed DAMN. LP. While King Mason’s remixes are respectful of the original beats, his sonic signature is all over the 7-track release from Rappers I Know. What might be most impressive is the thoughtful musicianship he contributes to the songs, which are driven by rich bass lines that only elevate the source tracks.

Mr. Lif x Akrobatik - Resolution

The Perceptionists aka Mr. Lif and Akrobatik follow near death experiences and monstrous singles with a full stream of their 11-track project Resolution, out now via Mello Music Group.

It’s music from deep in the trenches, songs that confront the blitzkrieg of bad news but offer light at the end of the bombardment. If you listen closely, you can intuit a profound story of friendship and camaraderie between Lif and Akrobatik—lifelong friends trading bars with the chemistry of Tip and Phife, Andre and Big Boi, Erick and Parrish. They’re mortal men who made mistakes, gained experience, and obtained wisdom. This is Resolution.

Hus Kingpin - Cocaine Beach

Hus Kingpin and Big Ghost Ltd. have dropped a project full of tight beats and tough chatter with the arrival of Cocaine Beach. Eleven tracks of uncut heat, this release is a treat for the true heads.

The vibe on this project is flat out what you see on the cover yo...the soundscapes of that 80s crack epidemic. Dirty Money. Reaganomics...dookie ropes n medallions the size of small rodents...Dapper Dan suits...Lamborghini Countaches n Ferrari Testarossas...Miami Vice...Chicks rockin aerobic shit wit colorful thong leotards on top of spandex leggings...Headbands... Let the music carry you away to that time...to a place called Cocaine Beach.

Billy Early - The Early EP

Kansas native Billy Early plants his flag with the arrival of The Early EP, which dropped last week via Fantastic Sound and !llmind’s Roseville Music Group. The 8-track slice-of-life project features production from ILL Brown, Skyzoo, Stik Figa, Add-2, Trox, Arkutec, Lucas Hart, Hye Q and more.

Briss Dont Miss - Sidekick Files Pt. 1

Long Beach native Briss Dont Miss puts on for the West Coast with the Sidekick Files Pt. 1 tape. The 6-track release follows the “Watchin Niggas” singles and plays like a vivid manual for surviving the streets of the wild, wild west. The production from Niko Beats doesn’t hurt either, especially on standout “Forever Dont Last,” which features a choice sample of Jazmine Sullivan’s 2015 single of the same name.

AbJo - The Art of Refixing Vol. 4

Soulection representative AbJo drops the last in a series of remix projects with The Art of Refixing Vol. 4. The nine-track release features reworks of joints from Lauryn Hill, Dr. Dre, Janet Jackson, Outkast, Kanye West, Migos, Jay-Z and Busta Rhymes.

The last installment in a series of remix albums of mine, featuring some of my personal favorite samples, songs, and even a few of the homies. Enjoy, and vibe out

Hippy Soul - Worthy Negrow

Memphis hip-hop duo Hippy Soul follow lead single “My Dojo” with the nine-track Worthy Negrow tape. Part slang editorial, part slab music, the project is an introspective collection of tracks that finds MC’s Idi Aah Que and Teco coming into their own. Worthy Negrow also features production from Bored Lord, Spekulate the Philosopher, Gum$ and Qemist.

Khary x Lege Kale - Tidal Graves

Rhode Island MC/producer duo Khary and Lege Kale follow the infectious lead single “Stronger” with the 7-track collaborative Tidal Graves tape. A scrappy chronicle of Khary’s ascent, the project is driven by quirky, melodic production and the kind of awkward black boy candor that will make him hard to forget.

Matt Ford - Dead Dayz

Resurfacing after a three year hiatus, Matt Ford marks his solar and sonic return with the release of the Dead Dayz mixtape. The follow-up to his seminal Dwelling EP, Dead Dayz finds the young OG spitting over his favorite Flying Lotus joints for the first half of the project. EARDRUM is behind the boards for the latter half. Absolute fire.
