First Look Friday alum, Kenneth Whalum, has returned with another project, Broken Land, which you can hear for yourself below.

The super-talented, dynamic saxophone player Kenneth Whalum was one of our first First Look Friday subjts when I started working at Okayplayer. Fast forward some almost two years later, and the alt/R&B artist has went from touring sideman to leading man with his latest project, Broken Land.

The project comes after making another star turn as the featured horn player on Jay-Z‘s “Bam” from the critically acclaimed, 4:44, album. Whalum’s Broken Land is a welcomed departure from the classic jazz space, as Kenneth dives in head first into the experimental world of alt-R&B.

“This s a very personal project for me,” Kenneth said via press release. “I believe so deeply in the reality of my emotions that I find a hard time releasing music until every single thing reflects the feeling. I did this with this album. I took the time to experience pain. I didn’t run from it. You hear that on these songs. You feel the heartache but you also feel the victory and joy that comes from those experiences. Sonically it is a very clear statement of all these things.”

With upcoming tour dates on the way + more new music in the coming months, check out Broken Land below, plus keep an eye out from more from Kenneth Whalum as it breaks.
