Kamasi Washington Readies ‘Heaven And Earth’ With New Video For “Street Fighter Mas”

The West Coast Get Down member Kamasi Washington readies his sweeping double album, Heaven And Earth, with a gaming-inspired video for “Street Fighter Mas”.

The young jazz great Kamasi Washington has torn up the roads, venues, and stages that he’s hit these past few months as he readies his next project, Heaven And Earth. The tremendously sweeping double album is out everywhere this week, and today, Washington ups the ante by sharing his new video for “Street Fighter Mas,” which you can watch (if you aren’t already) above.

The warm and expansive, videogame-inspired instrumental that he shared a couple of weeks ago gets the visual treatment courtesy of auteur AG Rojas. Washington, in his signature robe and beads, wields funky rings and a cane, looking like an overload at the top level of a fighting game. As he delves further into the mysterious office building, he encounters some strange sights and challenges a master.

“I love inhabiting Kamasi’s world, and ‘Street Fighter Mas’ was an opportunity to take a left turn and explore the surreal qualities of that world. When Kamasi told me the background of the song, how ‘Street Fighter’ was a safe space for him—it took me back to the supermarket down the street from my childhood home where my brother and I would try and get in as many games before our mother was finished shopping. It was a true labor of love for everyone involved, coming from a desire to interpret the cinematic qualities of the track into something equally unpredictable, familiar, absurd and ultimately triumphant.”

With that in mind, you should watch the video a few times to see if there are any Easter Eggs throughout, and circle this Friday, June 22, as when Heaven And Earth becomes available for purchase and streaming.
