Petition Calls for Charlamagne Tha God to Be Fired From "The Breakfast Club" After Rape Allegations Resurface
The radio host is facing calls to be fired after a 2001 rape allegation resurfaced earlier this week.
A petition calling for iHeartMedia to fire Charlamagne Tha God launched Wednesday, after a woman who accused the “Breakfast Club” radio personality of rape 17 years ago said she wanted to re-open the case.
Charlamagne, born Lenard Larry McKelvey, was accused of rape in 2001 by Jessica Reid. Earlier this week, Reid told The Blast she wanted to revisit the case.
According to a 2001 police report, Reid, who was then 15 years old, was given a drink that “tasted like soda” at a party in South Carolina. She alleges that she woke up to McKelvey, who was 22 at the time, assaulting her. Reid had later been taken to a hospital, where it was confirmed she had been sexually assaulted.
McKelvey was arrested in 2001 for “willfully, unlawfully, and feloniously engaging in penile/vaginal intercourse with a fifteen-year-old child minor.”
According to a report in TMZ, McKelvey was found guilty on contributing to the delinquency of a minor, due to underage drinking.
South Carolina, the state where the incident took place, has no statute of limitations for sexual assault cases.
In a 2013 interview, the radio host addressed the incident. He denies the rape allegation.
“Charlamagne has spoken about this many times over the years in public, including in his book,” McKelvey’s lawyers told TMZ Thursday. “While Charlamagne has empathy for all sexual assault victims, he cannot take responsibility for a crime he did not commit.”
The Care2 petition posted by user Derrick Real reads, “We want to send a powerful message to all of the people who like to prey on innocent children that it’s not going to happen on our watch! No matter how much money or influence you have, we will not allow you to hurt our children. ”
So far, it’s received over 8,000 signatures.
