The Abstract

Q-Tip

Modern hip-hop and R&B music can both arguably be divided into pre- and post-A Tribe Called Quest, and the musical efforts of its lead MC and producer Kamaal Ibn John Fareed-better known to the world as Q-Tip. Consider the jazzy sampling, laid-back tempos and boho-chic vibe he introduced, then mull over the bohemian posturing and sounds of the neo-soul movement, plus any rap music that shies away from hardcore posturing. All roads lead back to ATCQ and the beats, rhymes and life of one man: Q-Tip. And now the time is ripe for The Renaissance, the Abstract MC's first solo album in nine years. Read more...

Equilibrium was not a group that got massive attention, but for those who were aware of the act in the late 90s, they were not to be messed with. Majik Most was one of the pieces to the Equilibrium puzzle, and while the other members of the group are here to help him, he is taking care of business on his own terms.

GCF2: The Super Jump-Off
(10k Breaks : 2005)

Big Jess, one third of the Minneapolis trio, the Unknown Prophets, follows up his 2004 debut, Good Clean Fun, with the sequel, GCF2: The Super Jump-Off. The MC/producer showcases his talents both on the boards and on the mic while delivering an album chock-full of hip-hop songs that Jess hopes will motivate his audience. The carefree approach Big Jess takes with GCF2 is refreshing—the man just wants his listeners to have a good time.

Presents Smash Rockwell

Do you remember 2001? When the Hieroglyphics crew seemed unstoppable? Del and Dan the Automator led the helm, having a hand in all sorts of now classic underground albums: Deltron3030 and Handsome Boy Modeling School come to mind, as well as the duo being recruited by Damon Albarn for his first Gorillaz lineup. What happened?

Oh No

Sometimes the stars align, and music comes into your life just as something big is happening. Well, it so happened Ok Go’s sophomore release, Oh No, was introduced to me as I was getting the hell out of New Orleans before that whore Katrina unleashed her wrath, and it seemed to fit perfectly with the theme of a hurricane’s death and destruction. However, I enjoyed listening to this storm of an album at my home in safe-and-sound DC, rather than fearing for my life with the storm down in Louisiana.

Alias & Ehren’s Lillian is the latest in producer Alias’s growing library of “moodpieces”. So let’s throw the disc on and build. Hopefully the music won’t bother us. *half-full statical bass drum*

Plans
(Atlantic : 2005)

Does indie rock cease to be indie rock when it goes to a major label record deal? I've always struggled with the label, because although it implies "independent", it's more about the type of music being played than who's paying the artist. Despite Plans being their debut album for Atlantic Records, Death Cab For Cutie has been one of the forerunners of the indie rock scene over the last several years.
