Ta-Nehisi Coates' 'Black Panther & The Crew' Comic Gets Canceled

Marvel has canceled its Black Panther & The Crew comic book series.

According to co-creator Ta-Nehisi Coates, the series was canceled because of poor sales and will end after the series' sixth issue is released (only two issues have been released so far).

Black Panther & The Crew features Black Panther, Storm, Luke Cage, and Misty Knight in Harlem as they investigate the death of Ezra Keith, a civil rights activist who mysteriously died while in police custody. In the process of fighting to maintain peace in Harlem the team of superheroes also learn about other black heroes who protected New York City during the Civil Rights Movement.

As io9 points out, although Marvel's canceling of Black Panther & The Crew seems logical considering its poor sales, its cancellation could also be interpreted as a bad look. Prior to the announcement of the series being canceled, Marvel's VP of sales blamed the company's drop in profit on books that feature women and characters of color.

The website also points out that this is not the first time Marvel has canceled a Crew series. The comic books publishing company canceled the original Crew series in 2003. That story, which featured black and brown superheroes fighting gentrification in New York, ended up getting canceled after seven issues.
