Former Sheriff Joe Arpaio is dedicating himself to investigating Barack Obama's birth certificate.

In a report from the San Jose Mercury News, Arpaio, who was pardoned by Donald Trump (the pardon saved Arpaio from a possible sentence of six months in prison after a judge found that he had violated court orders to stop detaining undocumented immigrants), said he plans on continuing an investigation into Obama's birth certificate.

"It has to go down as the biggest cover-up in the history of the United States," Arpaio said, referring to Obama's birth certificate. "Nobody wants to touch it."

During his time as Maricopa County sheriff, Arpaio sent a deputy to Hawaii to request verification of Obama's birth certificate.

"The detective assigned to the Obama investigation works in the sheriff's threats unit, and continues to work on other cases while assisting with the posse's investigation, according to the Sheriff's Office," Arpaio had said back then. "...For this trip, I feel it's important to have a deputy there. He's just a liaison to give advice if needed. He's not doing anything. The posse's been doing the research. I'm not going to say what other trips they've been taking but they haven't had a deputy with them."

Ultimately, Obama released his long-form birth certificate in 2011 showing he was born in Hawaii. Last year, Trump, who had also propelled the birther movement against Obama, finally acknowledged that the former POTUS was born in the U.S. However, Arpaio believes that Trump's remarks did not directly address the authenticity of the birth certificate, which is why he still wants to investigate it.
