Why The GOP Leaders Should Apologize As Sgt. La David Johnson Is Laid To Rest
Loved ones said their goodbyes to Army Sgt. La David Johnson, one of four U.S. soldiers killed in Niger, but Trump and his cronies need to atone for their own sins.
“War does not determine who is right — only who is left,” Bertrand Russell famously said about man’s incessant need to wage battle upon one another. It is with that very quote that highlights this weekend’s tragedy involving Army Sgt. La David Johnson. Sgt. Johnson was one of four U.S. soldiers who were killed in action in Niger, West Africa, and whose death has been at the center of controversy between President Donald Drumpf and a black congresswoman from Johnson’s home state.
As Sgt. Johnson’s loved ones bid him adieu at a private funeral, it is absolutely insane and baffling that this is even an occurrence. Millions of Americans are asking themselves what were we doing in Niger in the first place. Then when you learn that the reason why his family is having a closed casket funeral is because Sgt. La David Johnson is that despite being still alive after the ambush and setting off his beacon to be found — he was left behind by his fellow soldiers, enabling the enemy to mutilate and mangle his body.
It is in incredibly infuriating. Maddening even.
Drumpf didn’t even have the common decency to pay his proper respects to the fallen. As you already know, the controversy behind all of this (which should include the questions involving the action in Niger) stems from Drumpf’s handling of offering condolences to Johnson’s family. “He knew what he signed up for, but I guess it hurts anyway,” Drumpf said to Myeisha Johnson, Sgt. La David Johnson’s widowed wife. Again, maddening. The family was surrounded by Congresswoman Frederica Wilson during that call, who told the world what the president had said, and incurred the wrath, vitriol and tweets of a GOP party who doesn’t take kindly to being outed in public. “She’s an empty barrell,” Secretary of State John Kelly said (and the White House has stood behind) becoming another person who fails to believe a black woman.
Despite the connotations of what “empty barrell” is supposed to signify in dog whistle language, it can be said that the GOP doesn’t know what the ramifications of ignoring Congresswoman Wilson and failing to properly lament with the Johnson family will do for those who choose to lay their lives on the line for this administration. Yesterday, Oct. 21, as flags flew at half-staff across Florida as Johnson’s remains were transported for burial at Christ the Rock Community Church in Cooper City, Drumpf was hitting the links to golf for the third consecutive weekend in a row.
Johnson and his fellow brothers-in-arms made “the ultimate sacrifice,” and all Trump could do, after handling the condolences erroneously, was politicize and insult the congresswoman in the press and on Twitter. “Wacky Congresswoman Wilson is the gift that keeps on giving for the Republican Party, a disaster for Dems,” Trump just tweeted this very morning. “You watch her in action and vote R!” Through his and Secretary of State John Kelly’s attacks on Congresswoman Wilson, these two loons are belittling the memory of a Gold Star family.
Instead of just shutting up, putting down the phone, killing the bullshit and apologizing for acting like a human waste of excrement, Donald Drumpf has proven that he would rather be the poster boy for white privilege than a decent human being.
