Netflix Orders New Animated Series From 'Simpsons' Creator Matt Groening

Starring Broad City's Abbi Jacobson as a princess and Adult Swim's Eric Andre as a demon

While The Simpsons continue to enjoy their historic 30-year run as the first family of animated sitcoms, the show's creator, Matt Groening, appears to have a new scheme up his sleeve.

According to AV Club, Groening has been tapped to develop a new animated series for Netflix. Disenchantment, a series that centers on the mishaps of a princess (Abbi Jacobson,) her elf (Nat Faxon) and a demon (Eric Andre) as they traverse "Dreamland" and its mystical levels of idiocracy. The streaming giant has already ordered 20 episodes, half of which are slated to premiere in 2018 in the show's first season. Groening chimed in with his own synopsis:

Disenchantment will be about life and death, love and sex, and how to keep laughing in a world full of suffering and idiots, despite what the elders and wizards and other jerks tell you.”

As for just who we'll see and when (outside of the show's three main stars,) details are still slim. But with a report as deep as Groening's (and a network of Simpsons guest stars that scales three decades of entertainment, politics and their copious intersections) we imagine the roster will fill out in a hurry. Stay tuned for more details in the weeks and months ahead.
