Kendrick Lamar On Portraying Drug Abuser In 'Power': "It's A Character That I Know So Well"

Speaking with series producer Courtney Kemp, the rapper first talks about being a fan of the show before explaining why he wanted to portray a character like Laces.

"He's a character that I know so well growing up in Compton," Lamar says. "You grow this type of love for them in a weird way. You don't wanna see nothing happen to him but you know he's dangerous."

"I don't wanna be something that people will predict or know," he continues. "I wanna be something out of the ordinary or something that I connect to. That's what gives me the drive...can I really kill this or can I really connect to this character emotionally?"

In related news, the DAMN. rapper recently spoke about winning and accepting the Pulitzer Prize as well as a viral incident where a white fan said the N-word onstage during a live performance.

"Let me put it to you in its simplest form. I've been on this earth for 30 years, and there's been so many things a Caucasian person said I couldn't do," Lamar said on the latter topic. "Get good credit. Buy a house in an urban city. So many things — 'you can't do that' — whether it's from afar or close up. So if I say this is my word, let me have this one word, please let me have that word."
