David Cassidy was recently taken to a Fort Lauderdale, Florida hospital where he succumbed to failure of his organs. He was 67.

As a kid, The Partridge Family was a beloved show, which showcased the musical talents and acting sensibilities of Keith Partridge and his traveling family of musicians. Keith, played by singer, actor and ‘70s heartthrob, David Cassidy had bigger fan club than Elvis Presley—and better hair, too.

Sadly, in a statement made Tuesday night (Nov. 21), David Cassidy died of organ failure, a few days after being hospitalized in critical condition. “On behalf of the entire Cassidy family, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, our uncle, and our dear brother, David Cassidy,” Cassidy’s longtime publicist, JoAnn Geffen said in a statement. “David died surrounded by those he loved, with joy in his heart and free from the pain that had gripped him for so long. Thank you for the abundance of support you have shown him these many years.”

David Cassidy’s career in entertainment spanned over 50 years and included stints performing in successful shows in Las Vegas and touring the world singing his hit songs. With his beautiful voice and shaggy hair, Cassidy became a teen heartthrob, a distinction so insane that the media began calling it “Cassidymania”. After his role as Keith Cassidy ended on The Partridge Family after four seasons, Cassidy continued on with his solo musical career, performing his own songs and songs from the show.

His struggles with alcohol abuse, arrests for driving while intoxicated and multiple stints in rehabilitation facilities were well documented. This past February, Cassidy announced that he had been diagnosed with dementia and would retire from touring at the end of the year. “I want to focus on what I am, who I am and how I’ve been without any distractions,” Cassidy told People Magazine at the time. “I want to love. I want to enjoy life.”

David Cassidy leaves behind his daughter, actress Katie Cassidy, 30, and his son, Beau Cassidy, 26.

Our sincerest condolences go out to his family, close friends and fans who have supported and loved him over the years. May you all continue to find the strength and resolve during this emotional time.
