SoL - AngeL

Solange

Solange steps out with a fresh, beautiful and delicious sound on her new CD, SoL-AngeL and the Hadley St. Dreams. The album (listen to it!) features a literal dream team of collaborations including Mark Ronson, Cee-Lo, Pharrell, The Neptunes and Lamont Doizier. Inspired by the 60's, Solange showcases a Motown influenced sound that has been given a "kick" courtesy of some London inspired Electronica. Highlight tracks include "I Decided," "Sandcastle Disco," and "God Given Name."

40 Cal

Mooga
(Gold Dust Media : 2008)
Posted on 08/05/2008
Straight out of Dipset comes the infamous freestylist 40 Cal with his follow-up to 2007’s Broken Safety 2. 40 Cal has been busy since then, dropping a mixtape, and now with Mooga, which apparently stands for “Money Overceeds Other Gangsta Activities.” Hopefully his finances are in check, because this album won’t be flying off the shelves.

In typical, yet effective fashion, this album starts with a triumphant, guitar heavy beat (on “40 Intro”) yet oddly enough has completely lazy flows which are emphasized by echoes and talk tracks. By track 2 (“Shooters on deck”) it’s obvious we have another thug-moniker-album on our hands, complete with guns loading and shooting in place of hi-hats.

Another particularly annoying thing about this CD is how the tracks are laid out. Each song is split up between 5 tracks which are around 40 seconds long. I guess that’s cool if you only want to listen to a part of a song (which some may choose to do) but it’s a bit ridiculous to hit skip 25 times to go up to track 5.

40 Cal himself holds his weight as a talented freestylist, but his writings suffer. For example, he explains one of his metaphors on “Googa Googa:” “Make you suck seed, get it? Succeed.” This, of course, is right before the chorus which reads; “Googa, googa googa. And she swallowed like googa, googa, googa.”

Hopefully this lame-duck review hasn’t hurt 40’s feelings, but I think I’m okay ‘cause as he puts it, “It’s a bitch emotion to catch feelin’s.”
