Animal Farm

Once a pejorative (See
Juice) the term “local” is an evolving synonym for organic/fresh. Much like your local farmer’s market, your local underground hip-hop scene is more likely to deliver something that satisfies the palate. Oregon MCs Gen.Erik, Fury, Hanif Wondir, and KWils comprise Animal Farm, a West Coast crew inspired by the best of 90s East Coast rap. While they might not have the overall skill of a lot of bigger acts, Animal Farm delivers a solid release with
The Unknown.
This crew’s affinity for the 90’s is all over this project, from the way the lyrics are spit to how the songs are arranged. The most ambitious tracks are also the best executed. “Move It” clearly hearts the nineties, and its lyrics, “I keep the party right like conservative” are some of the best found on the album. “Ragtime Girl” is a playful nod to the twenties. It’s a very creative track whose inspiration comes from a source rarely trapped in hip-hop. Unfortunately, after these first two songs “The Unknown” is not so unique. It’s not bad, but the rest of the material does not keep up with the pace set by “Move It” and “Ragtime.” The only really disappointing song is “Peace,” which I thought would be a lot better with KRS-One featured. Hopefully the next release from Animal Farm will be of a higher grade - one they’ve shown they’re already capable of.
