The Abstract

Q-Tip

Modern hip-hop and R&B music can both arguably be divided into pre- and post-A Tribe Called Quest, and the musical efforts of its lead MC and producer Kamaal Ibn John Fareed-better known to the world as Q-Tip. Consider the jazzy sampling, laid-back tempos and boho-chic vibe he introduced, then mull over the bohemian posturing and sounds of the neo-soul movement, plus any rap music that shies away from hardcore posturing. All roads lead back to ATCQ and the beats, rhymes and life of one man: Q-Tip. And now the time is ripe for The Renaissance, the Abstract MC's first solo album in nine years. Read more...

Kaliban

Point Blank Range
(Lock and Stock Records : 2008)
Posted on 06/03/2008
My first impression of Kaliban was that he was a Fiddy knockoff (not to say 50 Cent is original, at all). His new album is called Point Blank Range. He is on “Lock and Stock Records.” It leaves the listener with the assumption that he or she may be in for a virtual snot fest, full of Cali Killing Credibility. Whores will be referenced. It is a fair warning. It is what it is.

So based on what it is, Kaliban actually does it quite well. The production is nasty, despite having titles such as “Bend Over.” But unlike his NY counterpart 50, Kaliban can really spit. He has a nice delivery, sort of like a watered down Luda or Cube, and a creative gangsta vocabulary. It becomes immediately clear that Kaliban has been in the game for a minute, or at least paying close attention. The track “Russian Roulette” is a killer, if you catch my drift. The beat is beastly. He has a great mic voice as well.

We like honesty here at OKP, so it is hard to come up with a conclusion about Kaliban. I appreciate that he rhymes about what he claims to be, but we must be careful with what we claim to be. If you killed that many people, you better have some toe tags in your pocket…. just sayin’.
