i should also note that there is no way in hell that the retrospective cd should earn anything higher than a 12.

and yeah, i just checked the tracklisting on the retrospective, and "shoulda known" is the last track on it.

support the oops. - sean slug whatever

i think dale mistakenly reviewed the "retrospective atmosphere" cd that we sent out as an apology for not sending out advanced copies of the "lemons" album.
the quote he used is from a song called "scapegoat" (from the album - overcast 1997).
and it is indeed the first song on the retrospective cd.

i understand how this mistake may have been made.
but i don't understand his defensiveness in the comments section, after readers attempted to point out the mistake.

and at the end of the day, i think it's hilarious, and would never ask for it to be changed.
thanks for making me smile.

if you want dale, i'd be happy to have someone at the label send you an actual copy of the album. though i doubt you'd like it.

yeah this album sucks and should get more like a 64, but...

this review gets a ZERO, because once again in a world FULL of DJ's who are EXPERTS on HIP HOP, an industry media outlet like Okayplayer.com has chosen to Hire an AMATEUR, to write about things he knows nothing about.

personally, I know the difference between Slug, Spawn, and Atmosphere, and comparing this album to Overcast I would say its INDIE ROCK, like SUGAR RAY or CRAZY TOWN - The Great Hum

PS OKP should take this shit down and have someone who is familiar with Atmosphere's music AND has actually listened to the album (what an idea!) write a new review. - Ironman4

AHAHAHAHAHAHA what an IDIOT... LISTEN TO THE ALBUM YOU'RE REVIEWING... Nice redirect, Dale, nobody cares about your opinion of the album, so don't respond to an issue that wasn't brought up. People are clowning you because you didn't do your homework. If you don't know an artist's work, don't review their albums. "Journalism" like this is why nobody should listen to shit that anyone says on blogs. - Ironman4

since it's obvious that this review is bullshit, i'mma just give my own bullshit review.. love the album.. not really the biggest atmosphere fan, but i have to admit that this is a vast improvement from their last two official albums. The usage of live instrumentation in Ant's production works for the most part. The true star of this album is the storytelling. I would compare it to a pt anderson film in the form of a hiphop album.. loosely connected characters, themes, and stories.. although with no real climax. "the skinny" is prolly my favorite track right now being that i quit the smokes 3 months ago. anyways, not really tryin to down the reviewer or join in the smack talk... obviously, i'm not the best writer in the world either or whatever, but just thought i'd get this review back on track. - ojay74

By the sound of it, seems like the dude got a copy that wasn't the real album.

So, instead of ruining his opinion on it and make the album look worse, either HE (or somebody else) should be given the actual copy so a proper review can be done...because as of now, this review doesn't really do the album justice. I wouldn't even care if it got a lower rating, but to have a review on your site that isn't really the right album is just bogus. And I say this as a hip hop fan who comes to this website to look at reviews, and it influences the music that I look for. - p-dubs

the writer has no previous knowledge of atmosphere and their music. seems like he was just given orders to write this and so he skimmed through the songs without taking them in. o and that quote is from "scapegoat" not "like the rest of us", thats pretty embarrassing. next time you write a review about atmosphere, do your research and know what you're talking about. - seatown man

As I posted on the boards this is terrible, quite possibly the worst review i have ever read. Oh and to make matters even worse you are reffering to Atmosphere as 'He' in these comments. Seriously I have no idea how you have had the moderate success you have with journalism because you seem almost illiterate and generally pretty clueless about both your subject matter and the english language. I suppose this should be an inspiration to up and coming writers, as it appears that anybody can 'make it'. peace. - Eddy*

Dale,

Not here to dispute your experience or motives. Your website is poignant and you seem to keep it current. Just saying, that quote IS NOT in that song. I appreciate that you owned up to the spelling errors, you’re probably busier than me. My point being, as dudes repping The Roots etc. there’s a certain amount of responsibility is all. I know you get that. This isn’t a what’s up contest so everyone chill. And yo, I basically agree with your rating. I’ve been a huge Atmosphere fan since “God’s Bathroom Floor” but feel this album got sort of lost between ambition and expectation, though Slug’s writing is the best it’s ever been cuz he took himself out of the equation. But regardless, props to those dudes for trying something different…

To the dude saying The Roots are poppy: first off – for real? Secondly, when I said “representing The Roots” I meant via okayplayer, the website ?uestlove started and runs. No dick riding, I’ve never met the dude and we’re actually not allowed to review their albums nor anyone else’s that’s promoted by the site. But again, for real? You feel Game Theory and Rising Down are easy listening? Interesting. Not saying you’re wrong, just curious as to where that opinion comes from. I think it’s some of the darker and smarter shit to come out in a minute.

Respectfully,

Jeff - jeffartist

that's the problem, I don't think you have their current album if the first track has those lyrics and the last is shoulda known.

before the release, slug said the label sent out promos of a compilation of old tracks instead of promos of the new album to stop leaking, maybe this is what you've reviewed by mistake lol? best explanation i can think of. - weston24*

One final thing. I'm not gloating about the Q-Tip and Karriem pieces because all that did was paid the Geico bill.

Greetings: To the Okayplayer community, first off grammatically you're absolutely right, I should have looked at it a few more times. However, as an aspiring journalist all I have is my name. With that said, Common said a long time ago, "If I don't like it, I don't like it, that don't mean that I'm hatin'."

To the individual who made the point about me misquoting him, those are his exact words from the very first track, I didn't go crate-diggin' or go on Wikipedia to try and find some old verse and for what reason? Also, I'm well aware of not getting paid, I have a website called schememag.com do you think that pays the bills? If you tell my wife I sure do act like it does, so journalism has nothing to do with the money, my dream is that one-day it will provide for my family, which thank God doesn't include any children (as of yet).

My point overall, to me, myself, and I, I didn't connect with this album. Is that a crime? The beats were okay and the lyricism was on-point, which I believe I stated. I also believe I said that he did and continues to do a good job of staying true to himself it just didn't connect with me.

In regards to representing the Roots, I grew up on them so please don't act like I'm doing this just because I want to see my name online. To Ms. Ginny Suss and the rest of the Okayplayer staff, I appreciate everything OKP has done for me thus far i.e. the P.O.R.N. & Truck interview, the Kidz in the Hall interview etc.

Finally for all the folks that think I’m some fly by night, please pick up the new issue of Wax Poetics, cover story on Q-Tip as well as a piece on Karriem Riggins, with an upcoming piece on your own Questlove. Look I’m tryin’ and my apologies if you didn’t like HOW I said what I felt but music is in my everyday dialogue and I will always be a fan before a critic.

To Atmosphere if you read this, I would say the same thing to you (respectfully might I add). As an artist I’m sure you want to be represented well so my apologies to you for the grammatical errors, but I'm being as honest as you were with your art.

Thank you for the opinions and suggestions and the last dude for catching what I was really trying to say in the last paragraph. This will only make me stronger. Notes and messages can be misread so I want you all to know I said this in the most mild of tones no anger or animosity over here, I thank you all once again.

Respectfully,
Dale Coachman

not to mention,im the type of dude that thinks most of the roots material ive heard from thier new album sounds kinda poppy but these are just my opinions tho.

point blank, the review needs to be rewritten by somebody that has the real album. - i suppose it would be different..

if the album was wack then it would be "haha, this shit's wack, this dude didnt even listen to it because it was so bad" but ive been bumping this since it came out, this is probably the best hiphop album of the year so far and possibly one of the most creative/well rounded ive heard since "below the heavens". - i suppose it would be different..

funny, i actually requested to review this album. dude, you can't be misquoting tracks from 11 years back! cats on here are way too savvy for that. admittedly, i'm no hemingway and i know we don't get paid for this but please keep in mind you're still representing the roots and the rest of the okp community. by churning out misguided reviews, you're effectively dropping a deuce on the whole scene, your fellow writers included. if you're unsure about something, look it up. that's why god made the internet.
