Anyone who knows me learns rather quickly that I've had love affairs with both the Grateful Dead and Phish. But don't get it twisted, it never really went beyond those two. The Dead were pioneers and Garcia is one of music's great legends. Phish was destined to carry that torch, and on their own terms. Terms so much their own I like to consider them punk-rock-like in their defiance against the main stream routes. Both group's virtuosity combined with their respective self contained and sustained "other-worlds" makes them two of the greatest groups of all time, as far as I'm concerned. So when the opportunity arose to attend to this years "Jammy Awards" where Phish would be honored for their "Lifetime Achievement," I figured "why the heck not."

When approaching Black Lily, I didn’t really know what to expect. You see the musical lineup, the distinguished panelists and the venues and think it’s going to be pretty dope. But underlying the entertainment is a strong theme of female solidarity, which can be downright whiny and lame. Turns out for the Black Lily crowd, as opposed to the Lilith Fair crowd, female empowerment doesn’t mean folk songs, lesbians and Birkenstocks (at least not exclusively - there were plenty from each category well represented).

What do you get when you mix street corner doo-wop with a touch of Bill Withers’ melancholy romance and sprinkle in some of The Five Heartbeats harmony? Well, Raphael Saadiq’s new album, of course. A small group of supporters, journalists and industry folk gathered at the Sony Club in NYC to preview the vintage 1960s soul album. The feel-good, throwback music seems to emanate from Saadiq's own humble, mellow spirit. Prepped out in his highwaters and cabbie hat and surrounded by friends, some luminaries in their own right ( Nelson George, Q-Tip, Pharoahe Monch and Nile Rodgers), Saadiq entertained questions in the intimate setting and proceeded to mingle with everyone throughout the evening.
