In anticipation of the new J Dilla record, Jay Stay Paid, out June 2nd on Nature Sounds, Okayplayer got the chance to chop it up with none other than Mrs. Yancey, aka “Ma Dukes.” Despite her recent diagnosis with Lupus, a disease that contributed to her son’s untimely departure, and ongoing estate woes (which OKP was legally advised not to broach), Ma Dukes maintains a light so very bright and sprawling as the Aurora Borealis. She’s a rare paragon of positivity, an example of motherhood done right and proof that it isn’t necessarily who or what you lose, but what you do after. The average human could have easily buckled under her circumstances, but not Ma Dukes. To her, it’s all about the love; it’s all about the music and the message. In essence, Maureen Yancey is the Dalai Lama of rap moms. And this is what makes her proud.

A conversation with Mr. Lif is never a dull one. He’s one of underground hip-hop’s most compelling voices, unafraid to speak about the contemporary issues that Americans struggle with every day, and he’s hitting the scene with what may be his strongest album to date. Self-released through his new Bloodbot Tactical Enterprises label, I Heard It Today features production from Edan, J-Zone, Batsauce, Willie Evans Jr., Therapy, and Headnodic, and takes a hard look at political topics that affect us all on a global scale.

Talking with Rapper Big Pooh is like catching up with one of your best friends from back home. Despite the fact that he’s made music that has garnered critical acclaim from both fans and the press, toured the world several times over with Little Brother, and collaborated with everyone in hip hop from Lil Wayne and Kanye West to Pete Rock and Talib Kweli, the dude is a down-to-earth guy, and he’s not afraid to tell it like it is.

Rapper Saigon has had his fair share of hardships. From a prison stint to his electronic lament of the rap game, Saigon is a great example of perseverance; shady record execs and no backing from his label can put a damper on any rapper’s day. While he still hasn’t made his major label debut, All In A Day’s Work arrives just in time to keep listeners intrigued about the inner details of Saigon’s thought process. The Brooklyn native took some time out of his busy schedule to sit down and chop it up with OKP.
