Mixtape Monday: The JuJu, Tuki Carter, Left Brain, Run P. + More

Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Lion Babe, Thundercat, SZA & More Rock The Afropunk Festival 2015 in Brooklyn, NY.
This week's episode of Mixtape Monday is a split decision featuring a collection of rap tapes, debut projects and essential dance mixes for the week of May 1st. Leading the pack are DJs Run P, with his DAMN samples LP, and underground legend Tuki Carter, who contributes to the long line of maverick talents hailing from the A with Flowers and Planes.

There are tapes from the post-Surf Chi-Town quartet, The JuJuOFWGKTA affiliate Left Brain, and super producer Jahlil Beats. The infamous DJ Rahdu also drops a ton of heat rocks on our eardrums with his inaugural episode of The 2,000 Pound Crate Podcast before we close out the episode with some funky licks from Osunlade. Enjoy!

Tuki Carter - Flowers and Planes

ATL renaissance man and City of Ink tattoo artist Tuki Carter cements his status as a rockstar with his Taylor Gang debut Flowers and Planes. The 9-track project boasts appearances from Juicy J, Rome Fortune, Go Dreamer and Chevy Woods. The 420-friendly release is built to make you levitate. Gang boss Wiz Khalifa guests on the title track to help seal the deal.

Jahlil Beats x CRMC - Fr33 Spirits

Jahlil Beats and CRMC (Crush Records Movie Crew) team yet again on the Fr33 Spirits tape. The follow-up to their 2016 New Level New Devils project, the 15-track release is a heavy dose of real life rap that speaks to their collective experiences coming up. Thematically, Fr33 Spirits lands somewhere between Boyz n the Hood and Nas“One Love.” It makes sense, then, that the lone feature on this tape is Dave East.

Curren$y - The FO20 Massacre

As any Curren$y fan should expect, the Jet Life chief dropped a 420-friendly project in celebration of 420, entitled FO20 Massacre. About as meta as it gets, the 14-track tape opens with Curren$y applying his signature monotone drawl to EPMD’s “So Wat Cha Sayin.” Rocking over everything from effervescent club beats and funk to golden era classics, Spitta maintains his rep for being ridiculously prolific with a little something for the smoke enthusiasts.

DJ Rahdu - The 2000 Pound Crate Podcast 001

DJ Rahdu has decided to clean up his hard drive and we are all luckier for it. The first in a new series, The 2000 Pound Crate Podcast arrives to remind true heads of the wonderful releases, rarities and other treats that often end up at the bottom of the pile as new music drops from week to week. Crack the seal on this one as soon as you can.

The 2000LB Crate Podcast is the vehicle I will use to share some of the music I purchase, receive from submissions, or discover as I tag & organize my hard drive. Tagging and organizing my hard drive has proven an equally tedious and fulfilling task as I've unearthed so many treats I'd simply forgotten about. 2017 has also been a good year for music with so many good tunes being released. Shouts out to Simon Harrison' Basic Soul Show and GQ tha Teacha for keeping me up on a lot of albums/singles that would have simply passed me by.

The JuJu - Exchange

Just days ahead of International Jazz Day, Chicago-bred quartet The JuJu dropped their 7-track Exchange tape. The group helmed by Nico Segal fka Donnie Trumpet includes pianist Julian Reid, drummer Everett Reid and bassist Lane Beckstrom. The project also features contributions from Jamila Woods and Nate Fox. Though this is a much more spacious and adventurous ride, it may be safe to assume that if you dug Surf, you will dig this.

With one foot in Jazz and the other foot in everything else, The JuJu is a musical partnership of childhood friends who came up through Chicago Public School music programs. Nico Segal, Julian & Everett Reid and Lane Beckstrom use The JuJu as a way to build off of their past experiences in order to make a genre-bending style of music that looks to the future while dealing with the problems of the present.

The 18-track project is a special treat for long-time OFWGKTA fans that boasts features from Domo Genesis, Hodgy Beats, Santana, MadeInTyo, GoDreamer, Syd and more.

DJ Run P. - DAMN: The Samples

Run P. dives deep beneath the surface of Kendrick Lamar’s critically-acclaimed DAMN. LP to serve up DAMN: The Samples. The 1-hour mix provides a comprehensive examination of the samples, subject matter and creative process that went into making K. Dot’s fourth studio LP. The tape is punctuated by some sick cover art from Geoff Kim. Not sure about you, but this tape is one I’ve been waiting for.

Eli Fola - Irapada: Redemption Mix

Rising selector Eli Fola digs deeper into his bag of electronic and experimental jams with the Irapada: Redemption mix. Spinning house, techno and techafrique, Fola packs the 43-minute set with an abundance of static electricity and African rhythms from across the diaspora. The result is a booster shot of energy for the club kids and anyone else dedicated to leaving it all on the dancefloor.

Osunlade - Midnight Groovin’

Osunlade closes out this week’s roundup with a deep set full of dance gems and other soulful items. The 47-minute set is a top to bottom win that should compel listeners to dance freely. Tracks from William Florelle, Dan Shake, Body Music x Patchworks and Solee are amongst the jams that make the cut during this set, which feels perfect for downtowners and other suits looking for an excuse to let their hair down after work.
